Description:

Update (May 25): It is with the greatest happiness that I change his status today to "Adopted". It's been long overdue but this wonderful dog is finally going to experience the good life. Thank you so much to Karin for giving him a chance. I know they will be very happy together :)

Update (April 17): Roly-Poly got out for a nice, lonnnnnnng walk with Erinn today while I walked Snow. He seems to be losing a bit of weight which is awesome! He was pulling a bit at first, raring to go, but calmed down soon after. It seems to be his mission in life to mark the entire world, even when he has nothing more to mark with ha ha. It as hilarious because by halfway through the walk, he was so tired, he could barely lift his leg but he persevered! Roly-Poly is very people-friendly and for the most part, nonchalant about other dogs, but he does like to be the leader of the pack and will give warning growls to certain dogs who get too close to him. I belive if introduced properly, he could do great with doggie siblings.

Update (April 11): "Helloooooo? Is it me you're looking forrrrrrrr? I can see it in your eyesssssssssssssssss" - THIS is the dog you're looking for ^^

Update (March 11): "I loooooveeeeeeeeeee me a nice, long walk." Roly-Poly would loooooove a human to walk him everyday ^^ He is such a very sweet dog who does great on leash.

Update (February 14): I got my health check and I'm lookin' gooooood - I'm ready to go hoooooome!

Update (January 30): Thanks again to Heather for sponsoring Roly-Poly's health check. He is pretty healthy overall! He had a non-cancerous mass of cells under her eye which was removed under anesthesia. He also received teeth scaling for gingivitis. He is receiving treatment for the eye and a minor ear infection as well as a minor one on her nose. No bacteria or parasites, and ultrasonography revealed that her bladder, kidney, spleen, and liver are all normal. His potassium levels are showing a bit high so the staff will monitor that. And he was given a rabies shot and DHPPL. But best part of all, NO HEARTWORM!!

Update (January 25): Roly-Poly got some much needed exercise this week and went for a long walk with Bryan; a devoted Yangju volunteer ^^ This is a very sweet boy who will choose a walk or affection over treats/food anyday. He desperately needs to get out of his kennel more often because he is at an unhealthy weight. I can also see his personality is changing and I would hate to see him lose hope.

Update (January 13): THANK YOU to Heather for sponsoring Roly-Poly's health check! He also got out for a nice walk today :) :) :) :)

Update (January 8): He was very anxious to get out of his kennel on the weekend. But unfortunately I had no time to take him for a walk. He is such a super sweet dog, typical Jindo behaviour but much more affectionate than most that I've encountered. But he is not boisterous and does not jump up on people but if you kneel down, he will shower you with kisses.

Update (December 15): We took him out for a walk yesterday and as always, he did great! Pulled a bit at first, but after 15 minutes, he settled down and walking so nicely :) Roly-Poly is such a squishy bear and so affectionate. He's pretty overweight right now though and thus a bit lethargic; he needs to get more exercise. We walked him with Sunja who is a few pens down. These 2 both live in a pen by themselves and I doubt they have ever interacted with each other so there was a little bit of aggression if either one got too close to each other but after 15 minutes of walking together, they were totally fine. And it really is such an indication of what lovely dogs they are!

Update (December 11): I feel so bad that he hasn't gotten out for a walk for 3 weeks now >< Most definitely this weekend I will take you out baby boy! This is such a wonderful and calm dog. He has no aggression, he's just happy to be around people, to be around other dogs. He takes treats nicely, he lets us put him on leash easily, and walks great. He's such a wonderful little doggie; but lack of exercise is causing him to get pretty chubby. He needs to stretch his legs and get healthy!

Update (November 11): Boooooo :( I didn't get any pics of Roly-Poly on his walk today coz I was walking another dog. But he did great, as he did the other time he was walked 9 months ago. He is really such a laid-back dog, and so sweet and affectionate :) And walks great on leash!

Update (October 21): Still waiting....

Update (September 28th): I can't seem to get a new photo of him because everytime I try, he gives me the same pose - a big, BIG smile. It is the classic Roly-Poly look. He is such a happy little dog, despite the hardships he's endure and the sad environment in which he has been cast into. He just needs one chance to show someone how amazing he is. Please keep him in your minds if you are considering fostering or adopting.

Update (August 22nd): Everyone loves him, he is such an affectionate dog. A new volunteer came on the weekend and had been interested in him but there are lots of Jindos at the shelter and it can get confusing as to who's who. She hadn't realized he was Roly-Poly but said that he was one of the sweetest dogs she had met there and one of her favourite. See? He just needs a chance to show what a perfect pet he would be. He loves to give kissies and loves to play, and he made no fuss about getting a new collar put on.

Update (July 21st): Roly-Poly is your typical Jindo; handsome, dignified but affectionate, well-mannered, and always overlooked :( He is such an amazing dog, so sweet, why is he still living in a shelter?

Update (July 8th): Roly-Poly is still a little chubby and cute as ever! He is one of the friendliest Jindos at Yangju, and really craves human affection. He wants out of his little pen, and to explore the outside world, with a human (or several) by his side. I have never seen him be aggressive, even though he is surrounded by other Jindos who growl at each other through the fencing; Roly-Poly just sits quietly in his doghouse, waiting for someone to give him a pat on the head or a hug. I'm sure he is very sad that he hasn't been adopted yet; being a Jindo in Korea, in a shelter full of them, is a big disadvantage to this wonderful; he is always overlooked. But he maintains a happy smile on his face, in hopes that tomorrow will be the day he can go to a loving home.

I call him Roly-Poly because he's getting a liiiiiittle soft around the middle. Roly-Poly is a Jindo, who lives all alone in his kennel, but he is the sweetest dog. When I first met him, he was a bit shy, but still showered me with wet doggie kisses. Now he knows me and just loves to be hugged and have belly rubs given. I was lucky enough to be able to take him out for a walk once; he did wonderfully, I was so shocked considering I am pretty sure he has never been on leash before, much less a walk. He was fine with other dogs as we passed, and was really just more interested in marking every single object in his path, ha ha. Roly-Poly would love a chance to show a forever family what a loving dog he is, please consider him!

"You cannot resiiiiiist me" :)

Roly-Poly seemed a little down today, maybe the rain? But as always, when I came to his kennel, he came right out of his doghouse and showered me with kisses. He is such a lovable baby :)

This dog is so cute! I'm wondering, has he had any vaccinations or heart worm tests? I want to adopt a dog but I'm not sure if I can yet. From your description this dog seems a lot more friendly and to have a less dominant personality than most jindos. Do you have any idea if he is good around kids or not?

simply_ulee's picture

Unfortunately, I don't believe he has had any of those. Most of the shelter dogs need to be sponsored to have a health check. Jindos are absolutely amazing dogs; I don't find them to be dominant at all. It's very difficult to tell what a dog will act like once out of the shelter, there are no guarantees. However, I have witnessed a few of the dogs simply brought out from their pen and into the inside enclosure and their personality changed so much. There are sometimes kids who volunteer at the shelter, they don't seem to have any issues with any of the dogs as they are not aggressive; but obviously they have been living in a shelter for quite some time, they have a tendency to get very excited and jump on you. So if the child is small, he/she may get pushed over accidently. But with time and proper training, I'm sure it could be resolved. Thank you for your interest in Roly-Poly; I am now back from vacation and will continue to visit the shelter every weekend so if you ever want to come by and meet with him or one of the other dogs, we welcome you to join! They are all wonderful, amazing dogs!

Thanks for the information! How much does it cost to sponsor a dog for a health check? I'd like to visit the shelter. Then I could see Roly Poly and maybe take him for a walk and help out with some other dogs too. I really want to adopt a dog but I still don't know if I can yet. If I can't, maybe I can help some of the shelter animals somehow at least. I looked at a may and Yangju looks really far from my house - maybe about two hours. Is it up past Uijeongbu? Are there any busses from Seoul - like near the Gwanghwamun area or something? Do yiuhave any idea? Do you live up near the shelter? Because when I looked up a route to get there, my map told me to take a combination of busses and the subway. Thanks!

simply_ulee's picture

Hmm....it would be around the $150-200 range but I'd have to double-check with the shelter; see what their vet charges them. Yep, it would definitely be great for you to just help out, and meet the dogs, then decide what you want to do when you're ready. Yangju is a few stations north of Uijeongbu, 3 to be exact. I live 1 station away so I am really close; unfortunately I don't know how you would get there from Gwanghwamun....we usually take a bus from Yangju Station, then take a short taxi ride because the shelter is very rural.

Heather Lynne's picture

Is Yangju station on the blue line? Is there just a subway or are there any regular trains that go there? I actually live in Mokdong which is Southwestern Seoul, so basically the opposite side from the shelter. Do you usually go there on Saturday? Are there many volunteers?

simply_ulee's picture

Yup, it's on the blue line; it's only got a subway, no trains. My friend lived in Mokdong; unfortunately, there is no faster way to get up here. It takes about 1.5-2hrs. We go pretty much every weekend; sometimes Saturday, sometimes Sunday, but mostly Saturdays. As for volunteers; it varies, sometimes there are 20 or more (from other organizations), sometimes just me and my friend haha.

Heather Lynne's picture

Is anyone going up this Saturday? If I want to visit the shelter, should I contact the shelter owners/managers?

simply_ulee's picture

You don't need to notify them in advance; but they do not speak English just so you know. I will be going this Saturday most likely. Around 11am, and I'll leave around 4pm. There is a Facebook event I post weekly if you want to join. As I said before though, it's quite rural so if you go on your own the first time, you will have a hard time getting there and if you wish to come with us but not stay til 4, we can call a taxi for you but the fare will be about 15,000won to get back to Yangju Stn. Let me know :)

Heather Lynne's picture

Well, I'll come this Saturday! :). I'll try to find the Facebook event. I guess that says where and when to meet, right?

Here's the event page, and if you want to come, you can meet me and whoever else is going at Yangju Station, in front of the GS25 at 11:00an :) My # is 010-7203-0620 and my name is Ula.

Heather Lynne's picture

Haha. Yep, I didn't know this dog was Roly Poly. I was like, "I like THIS dog" feeling kind of guilty because I went to see Roly Poly - but then he WAS Roly Poly. I was confused because all the dogs have Korean names which are different from their English names. He sits in his dog house and chills, but then when a human comes to his cage, he runs up to the gait and wags his tail looking at whoever is there, waiting patiently. This dog is heaps cute!

allenjeong's picture

Okay I am not flattering, but he is such a gooooood looking Jindo! And he is really nice to people :) Look at his smiley face! <3

simply_ulee's picture

He is sooo super sweet :)

simply_ulee's picture

Going out for a walk, his favourite thing to do ^^ Other than showering humans with kissies :)

Roly Poly is such a wonderful dog. He's gentle and patient. I really believe he will be adopted soon! To the right someone out there, if you want a gentle, patient and compassionate dog - this is the little (a little big) guy for you!

Here are some photos of her vet visit:

Roly-Poly couldn't go out for a walk this past weekend but she got some nice playtime with a volunteer :) She is such a people dog and just loooooves any attention she can get. She really does need to lose some weight though, so please come out to the shelter and give her a walk ^^
