Description:

Flower is a delightful little dog with special needs. Will you be her angel?
Flower was raised in a puppy mill in Busan, then sent to a city pound.
Flower is in love with the sun. Maybe she never had enough of it, maybe she never smelled the grass while living in a puppy mill. She is a polite and grateful dog with a sunny, funny personality, and she always greets volunteers with a happy wag of her tail. Imagine what she will think when, for the first time, she gets to snuggle up under the warm blanket next to the person who loves her more than anything.

In December, Flower had a health check. the vet determined that she is at least 7 years old, and it was discovered that she had breast cancer and two hernias. This was probably why the puppy mill dumped her in the pound. Volunteers generously donated the cost of her surgery, and Flower is now fully recovered. We are so grateful to Dr. Lee of the Royal vet clinic in Dunsan Emart in Daejeon for his kindness and generosity. Flower is doing very well now, but she has some urinary incontinence issues like so many former puppy mill dogs. Hopefully, this will improve with time. Because she is so small, the toilet issue isn't a big deal, but it would require some extra time and understanding. Maybe doggy diapers could be a good solution. In every other way, Flower is just an angel. After all she has been through wouldn't it be wonderful for her to finally experience the joy of a home of her own?

Flower, you are GORGEOUS! We love your bright eyes and curious expression. We think whoever decides to take you home will be one very lucky person.

Sofia.. I think I'm falling in love with this baby girl!! hahaha. Ive been thinking about her since our last trip.. and about what a great friend she would make for my tiny Sophie!! Our last conversation about a 3rd (foster)... haha its got me really thinking -- especially with all this cold weather rolling in.

Little Flower is still waiting for her family. She spent her Sunday outside in the sun; enjoying the last little bit of decent weather, and taking in all the attention from volunteers. We took a nice stroll down the mountain, and flower did excellent passing other dogs, and seemed not to be bothered by anything. Shes a sweet girl who desperately needs a home where she can make a positive impression. Shes great with people, and other dogs. She likes being the center of attention, and takes in all the kisses and snuggles. With winter coming, please consider this girl --- her small size wont keep her warm, and shes well worth it :)

How's her health? We need to hold some fundraisers to pay for these dogs that haven't yet received vaccination and health checks - get them ready for fostering or adoption.

Hello, that's why I organized this event on FB:
http://www.facebook.com/?ref=hp#!/events/281664938542165/

Flower was sponsored by Julie and Barry O. and the shelter manager already received their kind donation.
We should know more about her health and have her health record by coming Saturday.

Great! Thanks for putting up the info about the FB event. Sorry, I didn't know about that. But now I can also pass it on to other people and let them know too.

My Christmas wish for Flower is that she will find her special person to Foster/Adopt her. She is so tiny and the harsh winter weather at Asan always takes its toll.
We would love to foster her but we can only have two dogs at a time in our apartment so there is no room at the Inn. Please consider this little Flower.

Poor little Flower. I brought her home and she was SO happy to be out of the cold. When I was bathing her I noticed that she has lumps on her abdomen, so I brought her to my vet the next day. It turns out that she has breast cancer and a hernia. She needs surgery as soon as possible. I was sad to have to leave her in the clinic because she was so happy to be in a home after her long stay in Asan shelter. She such a sweet cuddly little dog. Sigh....I'll bet these health problems are the reason why she was abandoned. Well, we are not going to abandon Flower. If you would like help with Flower's vet costs (our goal is to raise 400,000) for surgery please donate at 1002-240-455293 (Wooribank). Thank you so much!

The silver lining of this bad news is that she's found people who will not give up on her. Thank you!!

You can also post a donation request on ARK (as a 'blog post') so that your fundraising efforts for Flower can be promoted on the homepage and other pages of the site.

How bad is it? Is the prognosis good after she gets the surgery? She seems very young to be getting cancer.

deborah's picture

The vet expects her to recover well; however, you're right about her age. The vet estimates that she's about 7 years old. She would have to be at least that old to have cancer. That said, considering the health issues she has, she's incredibly playful and lively. Such a fun little dog. If she can get the surgery she needs, her chances of survival are excellent. Apart from these issues, she does have an eye problem which she's being treated for, and the prognosis on that isn't bad so long as she continues to live in a situation where she can get daily eye drops for some time. It's fair to say that she has higher chances of having cancer again than dogs who have never had cancer, but her prospect are good to have a reasonably healthy life if she has someone to take proper care of her. She's a very cuddly little bundle, so I hope someone will see what she has to offer and give her the love she needs.

I think Flower was a puppy mill breeding dog then, and probably had many litters before ending up at the pound - perhaps because they knew her health was no longer good. Anyway I'm glad to hear that the prognosis is positive. She's been very lucky to get out of that puppy mill and find her way to your home and she's still young enough to enjoy many healthy years of life.

Here's a picture from December before little Flower went to foster care....

deborah's picture

Just a quick update...Flower is recovering well from her surgery. Her cancer was completely removed. Unfortunately, it turns out that she had TWO hernias, and they couldn't be completely repaired. Still, the vet did the best he could, and she is much better off than she was before. I really want to extend a big thank you to everyone who contributed to the cost of Flower's surgery. She seems to still have a slight incontinence problem, which may be due to her hernias pressing on her bladder. We'll have to wait and see if this improves with time. It makes me so angry to think that all of this has probably been caused by her being used as a breeding dog in a puppy mill. Anyway...On Tuesday, she'll be moving to Daejeon Paws where she can fully recover from her surgery. At least she no longer has cancer, her hernias are much smaller than they were, and she will be in a much safer and more comfortable environment at Daejeon Paws. I'm still hopeful that she can find some special person who will offer her a home. She is a lovely perky little dog, full of energy and fun, and if someone could find a way to work around her special needs (maybe dog diapers?) she could still have a happy life and be a great little companion.

dorothy and toto's picture

Were the lumps removed from Flower malignant then? And also, what makes you think that the hernias were caused by being a breeding dog? I'm aware of certain reasons for hernia, because my sister has one. It can be managed and I was unaware that it caused incontinence. Is it possible that the incontinence is related to something else? Did the vet say that the hernias were definitely the cause of it? It's possible that there is another cause. I've heard of cases where some symptom has been attributed to an illness a patient has but it turned out to be a symptom of something else - which was not discovered right away.
Anyway, great to hear that surgery went well and she seems to be doing well overall. I'm wondering what the reason is that she is staying at Daejeon Paws.

dorothy and toto's picture

I forgot to add - could the hernias be related to something else? Environmental, diet or genetic factors? And how is the condition managed in dogs (as opposed to humans, which I know a little about)?

deborah's picture

@ dorothy and toto, yes the lump removed was cancer. Hiatal hernias ofter develop during pregnancy, though we obviously can't know what caused them in Flower's case. Regardless of the cause of her hernias, she has an almost constant need to pee. She has been treated with antibiotics, and she does not have a bladder or kidney infection causing this. Those would be the most common and likely causes of a constant urge to urinate. As you probably know, in a hernia, the internal organs push through the muscle wall that should contain them and are displaced. In repair surgery, the ruptured muscle wall is sewn back together and the displaced organs are pushed back into their correct place. Flower has hernias on both sides of her abdomen, down very low, right by her bladder. The muscles were badly torn and could only be partially repaired. There simply wasn't enough muscle to stretch far enough. However, the tears have been made smaller, and instead of having two golfball sized pouches sticking out on her lower abdomen, they are now almond-to-walnut sized. Everything that could be done to repair her hernias has been done. Since she just had her surgery last week, there's still a little swelling. She's still going around peeing frequently, so it seems that keeping her at DP is a good temporary situation until we can see how her health will be in the long term. I had intended to foster her, but I have 3 dogs of my own, and they all started to pee all over the house during the short time Flower stayed with me. I always try to have one foster dog in addition to my own dogs, but I honestly don't have enough time to care for a foster dog with special needs. I only discovered that Flower had serious long-term health issues after I brought her home. I am doing what I can to help her, and if her health continues to improve I'll bring her home as a foster if I'm not already fostering another dog. If you or anyone you know would be interested in fostering or adopting her, please let me know. She really is an amazingly chipper little dog.

dorothy and toto's picture

Deborah: you've put in a fantastic amount of time and care, but obviously with your other pets to care for and Flower's ongoing health and bladder issues, it's an overload and she'd be better in a different living situation. I'm sure she's getting good care at Daejeon Paws, but there are lots of dogs there and far too much work, so it'd be better for all if she could find a foster home where she is perhaps the only pet, and the foster carer will have the time to clean up after her. I think its's time to change Flower's profile to "needs foster home." Hopefully there's someone out there with a lot more time to devote to her extra care.

deborah's picture

Actually, Flower's health issues are typical of puppy mill rescue dogs. Dorothy, you're right that it would be better to find her a foster home where she could be the only pet. However, I'm hoping that she'll recover to the point that I can bring her home as I intended. In the meantime, if no one else steps in to foster her, I know she is safe, has a good vet, and I can visit and check on her regularly because I live in the same neighborhood. It isn't ideal, but for now, it's a few steps in the right direction. Right now, there are so many unknowns about Flower's prognosis that it's hard to know what to say to someone who might be interested in adopting her. That's why I wanted to take some time out and let her recover some more where I can carefully check her progress and get a clearer idea of what to expect in the long term. If there is someone who would be willing to foster Flower with a clear understanding of the challenges involved in trying to find a permanent home for her, please contact me, and I would be happy to arrange for you to meet her. She's a lovely dog, and she deserves a chance to be happy after all she has been through.

dorothy and toto's picture

My suggestion that Flower should find a foster home was more for the benefit of Daejeon Paws and the dogs there. I'm sure Flower is doing well but I imagine that her issues are taking up extra time.

Also, someone with no other pets were taking care of Flower it would be easier to monitor any changes in her condition. That's why I suggested the change of status to "needs foster home" with a note about the extra care and health issues.

deborah's picture

Flower is doing very well these days. She still has some peeing issues, but she seems to be adjusting to her new situation very well. On Sunday, she charmed the volunteers at the shelter with her open and friendly ways. If you have time to visit, please come by and give her a cuddle!

Flower was adopted today! After all she has been through, this just makes me happy all over. :)
