Description:

"I can't believe this dog hasn't been adopted; she's hilarious!" - my house guest
"Sully's like a hungry, hungry hippo... with fur." - Sully's petsitter

Sully is the most hilarious dog I have every had the fortune of fostering. She's a weird paradox of so many actions and really quite a quirky dog. It took me awhile to realize that she's not stubborn when she plants her feet but that I hurt her feelings! Once you apologize and pat her on the head, she'll happily kiss and make up and comply. Because friends do things that make friends happy, right?

Best way to become Sully's friend is to have food. Like most cockers, she's a shameless glutton. Some friendly encouragement plus some chicken treats makes training Sully a snap. She also adores her toys and will do all kinds of hilarious things with them. She also knows the command "go get your toy." The other night she was spooning her plastic bone. Although I think that the funniest think she does is hurdling over her foster sister while playing fetch (her foster sister does not think this is funny).

Sully likes to play inside and outside. She also likes to go for walks and run in the park. She's an active girl but not hyper. She knows how to relax inside and is very good about only playing with her toys (apart from the odd sock that tumbles out of the dresser). She's also trustworthy not to jump on the furniture or get into the trash or use the toilet on the floor in your house. However, she is also cratetrained too, and she enjoys hanging out in her crate sometimes for fun.

Sully does okay with the other dogs in the house. Recently she met a cat indoors and was very interested. The cat took care of that problem and now they get along fairly well. She seems very interested in children, but due to her unknown (and possibly abusive) past, she would be best in a home with older children only.

She does have a few things I've been working with her on. She's not trustworthy off leash outside. I think that's how she lost her first family! And someone has not been nice to her with their feet because she has a terror of being kicked. Now that she's in a nice environment, most of this fear has disappeared, but occasionally it resurfaces and she'll yelp.

At the moment she's been shaved and bathed, although the cut is a little lopsided. She's also been to the vet and been given a clean bill of health.

At the park!

Playing with a bone (and yes, we were just playing! Sully's silly)

Why only a month?

I'm glad she's doing better! And it's good to know she's good with other dogs too. Such a pretty little girl.

I'm not sure Megs. That's just what miss Moon says.

A couple more pics of this little lady for you. She loves her crate and pops in and out of it with her toys all the time. She is very active and would make a great hiking or running companion. She is nervous of being handled, perhaps because of bad past experiences, but she is learning to like people and I am sure would learn to like handling too with some patience. Great little pup.

Where is she going if no one fosters/adopts her?!

eveliens's picture

Sully went to the park for some relaxation and green times away from the concrete jungle. We worked on greeting people, heeling, sitting when the human stops and then learned how to play fetch properly (aka returning the ball)!

She's so pretty! :) thanks for taking her in!

Sounds like Sully is doing great in her foster home! Thanks for sharing the happy update, eveliens :)

Just another cute video at the park. Sully is watching me while the video is playing like, what?! I am a good girl. She hasn't quite gotten used to all the weird noises my computer makes :D

I obviously don't know the details of your housing situation but isn't it just possible to find a new place to live? I went through the same thing (landlord deciding animals are no longer welcome) so I just got some help finding a new (animal-friendly) place to live. It's definitely a hassle for you to have to move but the stress, for the animals, of moving to a new home with you and everyone they are comfortable with is far less than the stress of moving to a new foster home!

eveliens's picture

I tried to move back when my lease was up in Jan. and my school was... not supportive. To put it mildly. I also just sent all my savings home, so I have no key money. If I could move, I would, believe me. (even so, yes, I'm exploring the option of moving because this really infuriates me). However, since I don't know how dangerous the situation actually is, my chief concern is the animals being safe.

I don't understand why after a year and a half and dozens of foster animals this is suddenly an issue.

marlajoy's picture

Hmm, again, I don't know the details but perhaps you could get a Korean you trust to talk to your landlord. Maybe there is some other underlying issue that could be easily corrected. It's strange that the landlord would change after a year and a half. I know the issue in my old place wasn't my animals but it was a new neighbor below me being fearful of dogs. If I had known this earlier, maybe I could have introduced my shy, quiet senior dogs to her and she would have stopped complaining and I could have stayed. I'm sure you've given this a try but I just wanted to throw it out anyway. I'd hate to see your animals split up when they obviously have a great home with you! :)

eveliens's picture

The issue is my landlord's mother doesn't like dogs :( she thinks they're dirty and smelly and don't belong in houses. This was not said to me directly, but that's pretty much the gist. I think Sully might have actually been the tipping point into complaining to the school. She's the only thing that has changed recently.

BTW, this has NOTHING to do with the behavior of the dogs. They do not bark when I leave, they are housetrained AND cratetrained both, and they are fine with the neighbors. I even asked my co-teacher what I could do (clean up the hallway, do more laundry, bathe the dogs more often, etc.) to make it work. I was told "Dogs do not belong in apartments; the building does not belong to you, so you should listen to the landlord."

marlajoy's picture

oh geez! That is rough! Could you befriend the landlord's mother? It's a long-shot, I guess! Man, you are in a tough position! I'll be thinking about you and your brood and hoping this can somehow be resolved smoothly!! :)

megs's picture

Seriously?! The time for your landlord to do this was either before you moved in or before you try to renew - not somewhere in the middle. Fortunately, Sully is a cute, well-trained pup, and I'm sure you'll find someone soon. :)
(p.s. Dirty and smelly? Really? Your dogs get groomed all the time! They're cleaner than most kids.)

Sully had a weekend full of meeting new people and socializing. We've been working really hard on appropriate vocalization and she's toned down the watchdog persona. She just such a talker! People just laugh at the conversations Sully and I have because it sounds like she's talking back. It takes a few minutes, but she warms up to people very fast, even men.

She'd do great in a home with an active couple or person because like any young spaniel, she loves to play and hike. I haven't found a place to take her swimming, but I suspect she would do very well at it! She has no troubles walking briskly or even jogging and loves going outside (provided it's not super early in the morning; she's not a morning dog!)

Sully's new trick is to leap over her foster sister to fetch a toy. Hilarious. Perfect thing to do to burn off some energy without going out in the heat!

Wow, another amazing action photo from eveliens!! :)

Thought I posted this:

marlajoy's picture

What happened with your housing situation? You are now able to keep everyone?! :)

eveliens's picture

Sully went for her first walk without her foster sister Osoon. It was much easier for me to watch her specifically and go much faster to burn off that crazy energy from all the rain!

We met my English speaking neighbors. Sully wanted to meet the little girl but she was also a little wary, so she barked. But I think with a little more exposure to dog savvy kids, she'd be great. She just hasn't been introduced properly and sadly I do not have access to children that can understand me for instructions.

We also met a jindo puppy who Sully did a GREAT job meeting. She's gotten much better with her dog-on-dog greetings and interactions. We also ran across several street cats, including the one that sauntered past the dogs' noses. Sully showed no interest past a glance or two.

We've also been working on come, sit, stay in the house waiting for a chance for it to stop raining so we can practice in the park! It would probably go faster if I knew all the commands in Korean, but I'm also teaching her hand signs to go with the English, so that's why it's taking a little more time to get down pat.

Sully went to an island outside of Seoul for the day yesterday with a strange human and dog. She got along well with both, no fussing at all. She also was perfect on the island, enjoying the mud, rocks and grass immensely. Roundtrip it was a 10 hour trip involving taxis, ferries, crowded buses crammed with strangers (including this cute old man who insisted on holding her carrier and the delighted adjummas who patted her when she stuck her head out) and the train/subway. She was perfect in her carrier!

The only trouble we had were obnoxious ajosshis harassing her :( I'm not sure what they were doing behind me but they got her riled up, growling and attacking the bag. Once I turned it around she was calm again.

So I'm uploading pictures of Sully + mud, Sully + cat (plus ignore the mess; I was cleaning) and Sully helping me with the laundry.

marlajoy's picture

She sounds awesome! Why hasn't someone snatched her up yet?! :)

marlajoy's picture

Adopted?! Woohoo! So with Osoon and Sully gone, any plans on more fosters?! :)

eveliens's picture

There are never plans to ADD more LOL. Unfortunately, the landlord has made me hesitant to commit to anymore fosters. I'm currently doing an emergency foster for a cat that's not working out so great, so I think dogs are a better option. Sadly dogs are highly visible :(

I did the math last night and it's disappointing: 23 rodents, 12 dogs and 10 cats fostered in Korea. CLEARLY I need to foster 5 more animals to make it a nice multiple of 10.

marlajoy's picture

Clearly! :) It's so obvious! Or, 55 more animals to make it a nice round 100. ;)

eveliens's picture

55 might be a stretch in 6 months :P
