My friend Euni does some TNR neutering of stray cats with me.

A couple of months ago we picked up some strays who were living at a buddhist monastery near Euni's home. We took them to my vet in Hannam-dong, planning to have them desexed and then put them back where we found them. The first three that we picked up were pregnant, however. We decided we would put them back, wait until they had kittens and then try to find homes for the kittens. Euni told the monks this and they agreed it would be fine.

Euni then went overseas for a month, when she got back she returned to the monastery to see whether any of the cats had given birth yet, only to find that the monks had taken 4 of the pregnant cats out to the mountains and dumped them. She was obviously distraught, we offered to pay them money to show us where they had taken the cats (we were confident that we could catch at least one or two as they were very friendly toward people) but the monks claimed they couldn't remember precisely where they had taken them and refused to help us.

The monks had left one pregnant cat and several male cats (which we had managed to neuter) at the monastery. They assured Euni that they would leave these cats alone, however she went to visit them two weeks ago only to find that the mother cat had given birth to 4 kittens, but the monks had ordered all the monastery staff not to feed them. The mother was extremely thin and very distressed, so Euni took them in to her home to try and nurse them back to health.

Unfortunately she lost one kitten pretty much straight away, she was so malnourished. Another (Euni named him Scrat as he was scrawny with a rat-like tail) died last week despite her best efforts. He passed away at my vet in Hannam-dong and is buried in my backyard. Hopefully his next life will be better than this short one.

Below is Euni's description of the mama cat and the two kittens. Anyone who is interested in meeting them (they do not necessarily need to be rehomed together) can call me on 010 8940 5233 or Euni on 010 8826 0939

"Button – named for her little black button nose, she (he??) is as cute as a button and incredibly alive and spunky. She loves to play play play…and then play some more! She’d be great in any family, with young or old kids. She’ll climb all over you and then fall asleep in your lap…

Bunky – named for being the rambunctious one when we first got the litter, Bunky just loves to be cuddled…after she (he?) eats, she’ll climb into your lap, look up at you, and then promptly fall asleep. She loves to be petted and held all the time… She’s also a talker and isn’t shy about expressing her feelings when she cuddles up to you. She too would be great in any family, with young or old kids.

Nellie – poor mama has had a tough couple of months. She was being starved at the temple where she grew up and was desperately protecting and trying to feed her four little ones. She’s incredibly gentle and loving but a bit gun shy right now as she’s now learning to trust people again. She probably needs a quiet environment given her rough experience so a family with young children might not be right for her. But she’s a wonderfully loving cat with no demands at all."

An update - a really lovely lady named Sei Youn, her husband Luis and their two kids came to meet Nellie, Button and Bunky on Saturday and they have agreed to adopt all three cats.

So pleased that they are able to stay together - a really nice development for them after such a difficult couple of months.

Well done Euni - a great result after all your hard work!

Hopefully we will be able to post some photos once they have settled into their new home in Itaewon.
