I desperately want to take my cat back to South Africa with me, but my vet told me that this requires a six month quarantine period?!
Can anybody give me more information on the procedures of leaving the country with a pet?

I think your vet is mistaken. According to this site:
http://www.globalpaws.co.za/imports.htm
there is no quarantine for cats entering South Africa. Dogs coming from Korea require 14 day quarantine, but that isn't your problem.

The site has all the info you need. I hope this helps.

The procedures for leaving depend on the country you're going to. Everywhere I read seems to say that one critical thing is having rabies vaccinations at least 30 days prior to travelling, and a certificate to prove it. So that is the first step.

Here are two more links that say quarantine is not necessary for animals coming from "most" countries (but don't say which):

1) The S.African consulate in NY
http://www.southafrica-newyork.net/consulate/animals.htm
The S.A. Embassy in Korea website doesn't seem to have pet info, but here is their contact page, (http://www.southafrica-embassy.or.kr/eng/embassy/contact.php) they'd be the best ones to contact and may have official forms for you.

2) Pet Travel.com
http://www.pettravel.com/immigration/SouthAfrica.cfm
This one has telephone numbers of quarantine offices in S. Africa. I'd call them, too.

Hope that helps. Good luck!

Hi, I just surfed in and couldn't just leave without writting. :)

where are you located? If you are able to come in to our vet clinic in Itaewon, I recommend you to pop in for a consultation with Dr.Kim at Chungwha Animal Hospital.

Well, I am only a pet shipper at the vet clinic but when we ship pets to SA, Dr.Kim prepares all the paper works. she is very neat and so good at all those complicated works and dates etc.
One of our customers started it at their vet clinic out of Seoul, who kinda challenged to try SA regulations, but the vet after all just decided to send them to us. (but the customers were still satisfied, though..coz they didn't need to worry about ANYTHING but leave all to us. not to mention the import permits and agent searching etc.

I hate sounding like a person who advertise their work place lol, but I do think it is much easier than looking for info on the internet & struggling to figure all out by yourself..
