There are a few kind micro chips used world wide. In Korea they have 2kinds
apporoved by ISO.Trovan and AVID
Trovan 10 digit microchip and the 15 digit Avid microchip.
Not every vet has the International chip reader. Means that if you have your dog
chipped with AVID,then they cannot read another brand.
It is easy in Europe because they only accept one kind which is the 15 digit.
In USA they usually use both but the 10 digit is very common.
Make sure you micro chip your dog at an english speaking vet to prevent confusion.
The vet where you micro chip the dog has to register your personal info at a
data base where the chip is from otherwise the chip is useless in USA or Europe.
To get your dog a micro chip it cost 30.000won in Korea and 11euro in Europe.

Welcome :D
I forgot to tell why the microchip is enforced in the EU countries. I have no
specific info about the other countries but in the Netherlands it makes lots
of sense having your pet microchipped.
If the microchip system were not implemented in the thorough and serious manner that it is, I would personally never ever
microchip my pets as I wouldn't want that in my own body.
Why a microchip?
-Because your pet has to be registered and you pay tax for having pets.
-When you lose your pet and somebody finds it they will always call the ambulance
service or animal protection so the pet can go back to you.
Every animal service society or inspectors have microchip readers.
-Vet is required to report when owners refuse to microchip. In the past, owners of
puppy mills could do what they wanted but because of the enforcement of microchip
every pup or kitten has to be registered and breeding is now under control.
-Makes traveling easier through customs in Europe or other countries that scan microchips
-Every city/village in my country has animal ambulances. That means that when
your pet gets in an accident or is even found as a dead animal, the ambulance personnel
will always contact you and you are informed what happened to your pet.
Nothing is more horrible than not knowing where your pet is. This happens to cats
that go outside and likely get hit by a car.
In Korea, there is no such organization, which makes me think that the microchip
is just being introduced because it seems fancy or stylish.

Does anyone know what kind of microchips are used in Canada and if there are any vets in Korea that use the same kind of microchips?

According to this website: http://rfid.home.att.net/pet-chip.htm
Canada uses two types FECAVA and ISO. FECAVA is a 10 digit microchip that was used first and ISO is a 15 digit microchip that is now replacing the old type. It also says that the scanners should still work with both microchips.
I would ask your vet if they use the 15 digit ISO microchip (I think it's made by AVID). My vet does and he is located near Daerim Station on Line 2/Green. I microchipped one of my dogs, but I'm still debating whether to chip my other dog because I'm going back to Canada soon and the cost is about the same and there will be less papework.
When I go back to Canada I'll have to change all the information on my dog's microchip and register him into the system and I'm pretty sure I'll have to pay to register him into the Canadian database.

Sounds like a pain for moving back to Canada. I am debating whether to chip my dogs or not because I live on a big hill that has nothing else but apartment buildings ( 13 in total) and since I am the only foreigner the dogs and I are quite an attraction there so if they were to ever run away there is no where to go but down the hill and I dont think they would make it that far as my students or neighbors ( who love them to death) would stop them first. The dogs do always have their collars with tags on.
What is the cost in Canada... where do u even find that info?

I just found a comparison chart of microchip suppliers which includes pricing on the Alberta Veterinary Medical Association website, but it looks like the info may be from 2007 so I wouldn't trust the price list exactly. The list includes company names, telephone numbers and website addresses but not the vet cost of the implanting process:

Ottawa Humane Society's charges $45:

You could also ask someone to ask their Canadian vet what they charge. I haven't microchipped my girl, so I don't know.

When I microchipped my cat in Toronto about 6 years ago, the cost was $30 or $35.
Also, I don't know where you're from in Canada, but there's a spay/neuter clinic in Newmarket that just opened recently that microchips for $15 if you spay ($80!) or neuter ($60!) your pet there. I'm sure it would be similar at other spay/neuter clinics across the country.

Thanks everyone for your help. When I go back to Canada I will be moving around a bit from Toronto, to Ottawa and Peterbrough area again and again (parents place, school work ) for the first year I am home.
I will probably wait until then to get it done. I'll be in T.o first so I can start looking there( and I know the future plans of moving lots might make some people nervous that I wont be able to keep my dogs but no matter how many times I move I cant live without them :) )
I dont even know when I will be going home yet but thought I would check into microchipping here.
