Hello, I'd like to tell you about a fantastic opportunity available for volunteers, foster-dog parents, potential new adoptive dog-parents. Today was my first experience volunteering at an animal shelter and I was thrilled and relieved to see how much love, attention and care is being given to these rescued dogs. They have daily attention, plus every Sunday a big group goes out to bathe and help out the regulars. We bathed them, cleaned out their kennels, dried them, cleaned their ears, one expert was shaving them. All of the ones we bathed were well behaved, friendly and well socialized. I don't speak Korean, so there's alot I don't know, but my experience was heart-warming and gave me a chance to spend time with dogs, which I've missed in the past few months.
I didn't think to take my camera, but I will take it next week and post some pictures.
If anyone is in the Andong/Daegu/Wharyong area and is interested in either volunteering or adopting, please call Sue (she is Korean and speaks good English) at 010-4859-9197 or me, Angela at 010-4406-1330. There are some beautiful 3-4 week old puppies (with their mother), too.

Hi angielee,

Thanks so much for posting info about helping out at this shelter. It sounds like a great chance for people to get involved. I can't wait to see photos! :)

I've moved your post here into the volunteering forum so that people looking for opportunities to help out can find it, but once you do get photos of individual animals for adoption, please feel free to make separate posts for them in the Adoptables section!

Thanks again for sharing the info!!

Hello, Karen, I went back today and it really is an awesome shelter, funded by the City Hall here in Andong and run by two brothers who are so kind-hearted and a bunch of volunteers. They are pretty organized and have pamphlets that I am passing out at the university and placing in shops and they have photos on their own Korean website. They are at their maximum number of dogs now, though and so are getting a bit desparate to have some dogs adopted. I have seen 4 dogs adopted in the last 2 weeks, but there could have been more. I am considering 1 dog and maybe another one — I will decide next week. To adopt from them you must 1. fill out an application; 2. buy a dog collar with your name and phone number on it for 10,000 won; 3. take the dog for a trial period of 1-3 weeks; 4. pay 30,000 for vaccinations and possible surgery for the males; and preferrably 5. volunteer at the shelter. I believe they don't commonly do spaying for females in Korea, but I have not been able to get all of the information about that. Does anyone know? They also have 2 vets that are paid by City Hall and take care of vaccinations, neutering and any health problems. If you are anywhere in Gyeongbuk or Andong or Daegu and would like to adopt or volunteer feel free to contact me at 010-4406-1330.

Hi angielee,

Thats great info. I will try to do a search in Korean to find their website, but if you know it or can get it, please post. I'd like to help them get some adoptions by promoting their website!!

Yes, you can get females spayed in Korea, but it costs more than males. My dog got spayed at 6 months old and my female foster dogs were spayed in Korea as well, no problemo. :)

Hi, this is soo who is a member of the cafe and a volunteer of the shelter near Andong where Angie mentioned. We are so eager to find volunteers as many as possible. There are few people who can come to wih us regularly. Only two or three people are struggling not to skip the regular volunteerings on sundays. When you are interested in volunteering or fostering or adopting, please give me a call at 010-4859-9197. thanks.
