Animal Name : Candy
City/Location : Daegu
Breed : Toy Maltese
Sex : female
Spayed: not sure
Age : 4-6 years
Size : toy (1kg)
Health status/ vaccinations : From her foster mom:
The good news is: she's not actually that old, she doesn't have heartworms, and her kidneys are functioning great. The bad news is her teeth are rotting out of her head, she has a respiratory infection, she has mild pancreatitis/gastroenteritis, and she has no muscle mass, which is why she staggers around like a drunk. The vet gave me antibiotics, oral gel, and some low protein food (for the next week-- he said high protein food would make the pan/stomach/liver inflammation worse). He also gave her a steroid shot and nebulized her. She's actually acting like a dog now. He was wonderful, seeing me without an appointment and being super sweet to her.
Behaviour/Personality : From her foster mom:
Little Miss Twinkle Toes and I arrived safely and with minimal fuss. She doesn't like being confined, so I actually took her out on the train and stuffed her in my jacket. She loves to be held like a baby and carried in the jacket. She also seems to be potty trained. I don't know about the pads, but she went outside every time I took her out and had some chances to go inside my friend's house/her kennel and she didn't.
I think once the infections clear up and she cleans up she'll be an excellent pet for someone who wants a lap dog. She wants to be held all the time, and she's very social-able and not easily startled. She was enjoying all the attention this afternoon
Rescue story : KAPS took her in and provided for her basic needs until eveliens took her home to foster. Eveliens is nursing her back to health. Look for great updates coming soon ^^
Adoption fee : TBA
If you are interested in meeting Candy, please email me at adoptbullies@gmail.com. Candy will not be available for adoption until the end of January, she needs time to heal.

She is now in foster care. Soon I bet she will put some weight on and become healthy again. She will not be ready for adoption for at least a month, she needs to regain some strength first. But expect good things from this precious one!

Hi, this is the maltese's foster. She's been named "Candy" on paper but I haven't settled on a permanent name.
Candy went to the vet today and she does has some issues. They are fairly easy to fix with antibiotics and given some time and good food they should all go away. She will need her teeth cleaned/extracted however. She is heartworm negative, which is excellent.
Also, the vet said she is not as old as she looks/acts. I suspect she's actually 4-6 years old. She's just sick and skinny. Most likely why her family dumped her. After a steroid shot and some antibiotics she bounced up and ran around.
She is a major cuddler and loves to be held like a baby. She's actually in my jacket right now like some kind of crazy kangaroo baby. She will sit like that for hours and go to sleep. She has a very steady temperament and a sweet personality. She paid no attention to the cats or other dogs, so she is mostly likely good with other animals. I would not recommend her for a house with children due to her size.

Aw, what a sweet little girl. Thanks for taking care of her. She's so skinny but my maltese is also skinny and doesn't eat much. I hope she gains a little weight.

Will she need all of her teeth pulled or just a few?
They are fairly easy to fix with antibiotics and given some time and good food they should all go away. . She is heartworm negative, which is excellent. FANTASTIC NEWS! Glad to hear :)

The vet didn't say, as he was more concerned with her other problems, but I think she'll get to keep most of her teeth :)
And eating is NOT a problem. Try to get this little one to stop eating. Unfortunately, her previous family quite obviously fed her from the table because she is a shameless beggar.
Other than that little annoying quirk, she's probably one of the lowest maintenance dog I've fostered/owned. She's not a barker, even when someone knocks at the door, and she doesn't destroy things. The pad training isn't 100% but she goes in the bathroom, which makes clean up a snap.
She definitely has a maltese personality. She's very loving and cuddly and really just wants to be with people. If she can't be in a lap, she'll be near by in front of the heat fan watching you. She's also very patient. Not many dogs would let you flip them over practically upside down and use scissors on their butt.
I also learned I'm not a dog groomer, so please forgive the horrible chop job. The hair is out of her face, and that's what matters :)

Nothing but positive things to update. She's gaining weight already and her sniffles are almost completely gone. Now that she's feeling better she likes to play and wrestle. She also enjoys being brushed and will flip on her back with her paws in the air.
She is definitely an easy keeper. She would be a great beginners dog or a maltese lovers dog or just a great pet in general. If she continues to improve so quickly, she should be available for adoption soon!

If there were chocolate pudding in this house, I would be the one eating it... thanks for reminding me of the lack :D
And Candy was not thrilled today when I gave her a bath and removed her mustache and cut out all the knots when I brushed her out.

A quick update. Candy has regained her strength... and a little bit of attitude with it.
She's been at a sitters while I was on vacation and I swear I came back to a new dog. Well, not entirely, but she did pull some brat acts while I was gone (hunger striking for biscuits, ha).
The sitter said that overall she did very well and was such a sweet, personable dog but advised me to warn people about her "banshee shriek." Yes, she doesn't bark often, but when she gets excited/upset, she makes a horrible noise. It doesn't particularly bother me because she usually stops after a few barks, like when I get home.
Unfortunately, she doesn't travel well at all. Now that she's energetic, she raises a huge fuss when crated. I've started working on this, but I wouldn't recommend her to a home that does a lot of traveling.
Since I've gotten her home and settled, her acts have stopped, so I think it was mostly because she was upset at the changes. My pipes broke while I was gone and so she happily invited the repairmen in and kept trying to get them to pet her and pick her up.
And health-wise, I think she's ready to be put up for adoption! No more cough and getting a bit pudgy. Her balance still isn't 100% but its so much better and definitely makes her quirky. Walking her is like being followed by a wind-up toy :D
If you have questions about Miss Candy, please PM me or email adoptbullies.

I thought I would add my own comments here as I procrastinate working on my thesis....;)
I doggy sat Candy for a couple of weeks and have to say that Candy is just adorable. She is very personable and friendly - not at all shy. She loves other dogs (have only seen her with small-ish dogs) and while she did meet a baby while under my care.... she loved the baby but got too excited and did her famous bansee scream in the babies face.:(
Her foster mother is working wonders with her though and I wouldn't be surprised if Candy looses this less than charming screech as she is better socialized. A real cuddle bug this one! And it's true! She really does walk like a wind up toy!

I should add that in the two weeks that I doggy sat her she only screeched once or twice each day when I came home, and when she met the baby. She is otherwise an extremely quiet dog. And sooooo sweet!

Her foster mom writes:
I hate to write this email, especially when she had a potential forever home, but Candy went to the Rainbow Bridge. She was acting strange at the beginning of the week, sick in the middle, then she perked up and did well, then she crashed. The vet said she had pneumonia; he thought it might have been the same infection from before. I've been keeping her hydrated and warm, but she passed just a few moments ago in my lap. I feel terrible, I know part of it was unavoidable (her shitty immune system, incubated bacteria, other factors I couldn't control).
The vet was really nice about it and didn't charge me for the visit. He was sincerely sorry, saying she was just too "old" to fight off the infection. I just try to remember that she had a month longer to live in a nice, warm house with attention and treats.

I'm sorry for both Candy and her foster mom. It sounds like it was so sudden and unexpected and just heartbreaking . I'm glad she was able to have at least one month in a nice warm house with someone to care for her, though.

I got to look after Candy for 2 weeks and she was the sweetest little doggy. This is just so sad, but Candy was lucky in that she had such a great foster mom for her last month. She got to experience being a proper dog in a proper, safe, caring home before she went off on her journey.... And it does warm my heart to know that she passed in the arms of her caring foster mom.
Say hi to Jayoo Candy!

Nicole, Erin, and Caroline. I'm so sorry for your loss. As mentioned in this trail of messages, the bright side to Candy's sad story is that for the last 7 months (dog years) of her little life, she had a warm home where she had laps to sit on, treats, and a cozy bed.
It is hard to love these little ones and lose them. But the eventual heartbreak over their loss is worth the time spent in their company...loving them and receiving their affection in return.
Thank you to the three of you for what you did for her. Cherish her memory, and I look forward to the photos of the others I know you will save.
