First off I had no idea of the scale with which foreigners were rescuring and adopting pets her in Korea. I've been in Daegu for years now and several friends have adopted cats with great results. Hats off to pet lovers especially those of you one the front lines.

My question is: I have a six month old Cocker Spaniel who will be traveling home with me in a few months and I am having great difficulty locating a proper crate. I know that it is important to have my dog comfortable with the crate long before transport. Needless to say there are specific regulations regarding airline apporved crates. I have surfed net for online stores, however my Korean is limited. Can anyone advise me on where to find an airline approved crate for a medium sized dog. On the net or in Daegu preferably. Korean websites are fine, a friend can do the translating. Thanks in advance, and again, great to see the positive results foreigners are having on Korea.

Hi there, welcome to the site!

I actually had some trouble finding a good crate for my small, 7kg dog. Who knew mini-schnauzers were "large" dogs? :)

I checked all over Daejeon, but ended up asking my vet to order one, which he did from a supplier in Seoul. It was too big, he returned it and ordered a new one no problem. Each took about 3 days to arrive.

The one we got is the Petmate Varikennel (http://www.petmate.com/Products/Vari-Kennel-and-Vari-Kennel-Fashion__21700.aspx), it has the metal "locking" doors, ventilation on all sides, and the 1 inch "lip" around the edge which is a requirement, I believe. I can't remember what it cost, in the 100,000 won range, so more expensive than in North America, but well, it's imported :( Maybe your vet will know of a Korean maker that offers cheaper ones...

Anyway, I'd start by asking your vet what s/he can order for you.

Thanks alot for the tip. I will be visiting the vet again this week so I will take your advice. Glad I wasnt the only one having this problem. Seems that most pet supplies are on the cutsie side without the practicality.

Hello,
Maybe we can supply the kennel to you if your vet cannot find any proper one.. We have Vari kennel, Air Travel Carry, or any other brands... Please let me know if you cannot find one.
Thanks.

I've seen catalogues for things that can be ordered at some vets too. There is also a kind of pet Semi-superstore downtown in Daejon. Many of you in Daejon are probably familiar with the pet store street near the walking street in Eunheng-dong. :)Thankfully, many of the stores have closed and there are now a few vets there. One of the stores has expanded and has a greater variety of cages and carriers than any of the other stores I've seen. Also, they have something like 5-10 styles of clippers instead of two or three like most stores. Interesting sidenote---this store sometimes sells Malamute puppies.

Thanks Gina! I will order mine with you soon. You know the best what is good,I know
many people who buy their own kennel because they think it is the right one and
then the flight refuse them. Some flights are very strickt about that.
I noticed that many vet in Korea think that every hard cover is fine and it is not.
I'll contact you soon! ;)

Hey Gina,

We are having quite a bit of difficulty tracking down two crates for our dogs. If possible, we may want to order two with you.

What sorts of crates do you have and how much do they cost?

Thanks for any help,

Dawna

Hey, I found a website that would be willing to ship to Korea. Although their website only allows for US shipments, I e-mailed and they said that they'd be willing to ship to Korea if I gave them a list of all the things I wanted.

Anyway, here are a few links to some crates that seem pretty cheap and are airline approved!

Could you guys let me know what you think of these crates?

1. http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?c=3307+10627+16017&pcatid=16017

2. http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?c=3307+10627+11122&pcatid=11122

3. http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?c=3307+10627+12047&pcatid=12047

And then there's another website and they offer only one kennel... here it is:

Thanks for any feedback!

Hi Gina - I sent you an e-mail about buying a crate. I'm afraid they might have gotten put into the spam filter. I can post the e-mail here if necessary. This kennel has a link posted above - do you have this one - or would you be able to get it?

I was walking to the bus from immigration yesterday and saw a small pet shop with several of the kennel crates that (in my opinion) would be airline approved. They had all sizes, from 60,000 to 190,000 won for a huge one. The shop card says Jin Joo Ah, 진 주 애 견 and the phone number is: 042-252-4630...Korean only.

Hey,

So we bought airline approved crates, and in the process of crate training them, we have been leaving them open for the dogs to go into when we are not home, just to get them more familiar and comfortable. Anyways, we came home and the outside corner of the kennel was chewed so that now it looks a little deformed. It still works properly but I am not sure about the specific rules for the crates. Does anybody know if this is a problem for when we want to bring them home to Canada?

hi, I noticed a post that you replied to about supplying a crate for animals. I was wondering you have more? do you run a store that sells them? I need one for my cat, who I will be taking home in about two months if no one takes him before then, but I don't really want to order one. look forward to hearing from you.

Here are two online pet supply shops, but I've never used either:

I haven't searched for crates on this one:

I've checked these websites, but everything seems so tiny.. It's like everything here is made for puppies or extremely small dogs.
I'm looking for a carrier bag (for subway and public places), but they seem to be made for puppies only.

GMARKET

I got my crate off of GMARKET. Its easiest if you search ATC 870. I got my crate for my dog who is about 50lbs and its airline approved.

This is the description from Amazon for the Iris ATC-870 crate: "FAA Approved for air travel, this heavy duty carying crate is designed to meet all travel requirements. Access door opens from either side and an attachable food/water tray is included. Accommodates door pad lock. Superior ventilations with convenient carry handle. "Live animal" sticker included. Weight capacity up to 65 lbs. 24.41" W X 34.25" D x 25.75" H"

Here's the link off amazon so you can see a pic; http://www.amazon.com/Iris-301509-ATC-870-Large-Carrier/dp/B000FS6QJ6

But search ATC 870 on gmarket and even if you need it a bit smaller just look at the seller's mini-store and they all have Iris crates of different sizes. I believe it was 169,000 won. I ordered it on a Monday and had it on a Wednesday. Its a bit of a pain to assemble, you gotta screw in 17 different screws (I actually haven't finished yet cause I want to zip tie all the screw holes) but I like I feel confident that it'll stay together during air travel. I like the door opening on both sides, how it comes with a LIVE ANIMAL sticker, and how the top has not one but two handles and it did come with a nice detachable little food/water dish.

For whatever reason on GMARKET a simple search for kennel or dog cage doesn't turn these things up, it just took a lot of searching through pages to find them. Several different sellers sell them but if you want to know which exact one I got mine, just message me and I'll send you the info.

Im selling it for 70,000 wheels included!

also, if you need a bigger crate than that Chungmuro in Seoul (light blue line one stop from myeongdong) has a selection of every size crate you need. The whole street is basically pet supply stores. You can get everything you need. They even have the golden retriever size crates.

I'm afraid its not but if you go to Chungmuro, the pet shops there have loads of different crates to choose from. Its on the light blue line, one stop past Myeongdong. As long as you have the dimensions you need you should be able to pick one up no problems.
