My dad is leaving for Kuwait in a week or two with the US Army and my cousin is in Baghdad so I try to have some sense of pride in the military. Hearing about soldiers killing innocent people intentionally, raping, etc and then seeing videos like this makes it really hard...

but a sick coward!

The video is so disturbing! What kind of role model or an example are you showing to the world that brutalizing innocent people or animals are acceptable? Does it really make them feel much more superior for throwing a poor PUPPY over the cliff? Argh! That makes me so mad. There are so many great soldiers overseas or deployed that are doing the best they can and working so hard for us, for our country. The last thing they need is a nutthead like this guy to jeopardize their rep. This guy needs to go back home so his momma can give him a few spankin'! He needs to grow up and as pukka stated...what a sick coward!

I don't know what kind of feelings (or lack of them) you must have inside to be able to do something like that.
To be able to do that with a smile and a shrug makes me sick.

Yeah it's really disgusting. It's really frustrating because I've been attacked by some Canadians here about the military and then even moreso when I tell them my father and cousin are currently overseas so I have to defend the military...then it gets harder when I see stuff like this.
It's completely awful.

United States Defense Leaders and Marine Corps:
Thank you for addressing the Marines recently videotaped taunting a defenseless puppy. I urge you to aggressively investigate this crime and take prompt punitive action.
As you know, a man identified as David Motari dangles a black and white dog by the scruff of the neck, cooing: "Cute little puppy." Another unnamed soldier baby-talks: "Ah, so cute, so cute...little puppy." To the horror of global Internet viewers, Motari then hurls the animal over a cliff into a rocky gulch. The dog, who looks about 12 weeks old, squeals while flying through the air. We hear a thud below, signifying the dog's certain death.
"That was mean Motari," the unknown Marine jokes. Motari shrugs and grins.
The question is not WHO the victim is, but WHAT is done to him or her. Criminologists view the brutality of an act, regardless of the victim's identity, as a precursor to future violence. Animal cruelty is a key trait in the American Psychiatric Association's criterion for conduct disorders. David Motari displays characteristics associated with sociopaths.
I respectfully ask the Military Police Department of Hawaii, where Motari is stationed, to conduct a thorough probe. If Motari and other suspects are apprehended, please advocate maximum penalties for aggravated cruelty and intentional killing of a companion animal. Certainly, Motari and his accomplice ought to undergo psychological counseling.
This is not the first video leak of soldiers tormenting animals in Iraq. I hope this case prompts Defense Department officials to make regulatory changes for animals in war zones. Specifically, I encourage the DOD to:
* Insert an anti-cruelty clause in the Universal Code of Military Justice.
* Utilize non-lethal vaccination to cope with rabies in war zones.
* Permit soldiers to bring vetted pets back to the U.S. with them.
The men in the video do not represent other brave men and women who serve our country. This is all the more reason to pursue rigorous judicial action against the few who sully America's moral repute.
Thank you for holding animal abusers accountable for their violent crimes.
Sincerely,

There was an article on CNN today about it. The Marines have Motari placed under protection because the backlash to the video has been such severe (as it should be). He is currently under investigation. His punishment could range from paperwork (slap on the wrist) to a court martial to being discharged.
I hope this a-hole is discharged.

“We’ve seen every kind of animal abuse on YouTube, from clips of dogs fighting to one of a kitten being thrown off a fifth floor balcony for fun. It’s definitely not a joke; really it’s a sad reflection on our society,” a spokesman said.

Psychologists say that people who are cruel to animals tend to be cruel to other human beings. Suzanne Conboy-Hill, a psychologist, said: “Research in the United States shows that often people who have been imprisoned for violent or sadistic crime have also confessed to carrying out cruel acts against animals.”

Well, my point is simply that I don't think Alibuch was judging all of them. Plus, if you read her thread here http://www.animalrescuekorea.org/forums/showthread.php?t=416
you would know that she comes from a military family and is obviously not judging all of them.
Anyway, I would like all of us to stop spamming the thread about the poor kitty who died! This thread is about a poor kitty who needs to rest in peace, so let it be so!!

luvadog,

Just a reminder. We all get close to discrimination at some time in our lives. I also have a hard time not judging all people by a few, and therefore need to be reminded when I make an insensitive comment, be it through innocence or emotional, righteous indignation.
For instance I got on the elevator yesterday with my 2 little babies in tow and some ajuma made a big issue out of smells, held her nose and looked at my dogs in disgust. They had just had a bath the night before and I told her I smelled cigarettes and kimche. Someone sent me a youtube video of the dogs going to market, being hanged, beaten, etc. and it ended with "Interesting people---Dynamic Korea!" Those people teach here and call Koreans barbarians.
Kitty will rest in peace and maybe she will teach us all a lesson. And she does have a name. It's Kitty and that's fine. My Siamese cat I had for 17 years was name Kitty Cat.

If I remember correctly, you jumped all over someone on this forum who misjudged you. Right? Maybe you should have read what I wrote. The solider was a Marine... he wasn't in the Army. I said nothing about judging soliders or Americans. And also, I'm the one who made the thread about this jerk soldier throwing the puppy of the cliff. If you check that you will see a) that I'm American (so yes, I know what's it like to have to deal with people's ignorance about Americans) and b) basically my entire family has been in the military, including my mother. And my father, cousin and several friends are serving right now in Iraq and Kuwait and I've had a friend (who was a Marine) killed.
So before you start "judging" people, heed your own advice and read what I actually wrote instead of jumping to conclusions.
And you brought up the Korean dog eating industry... and that's funny because I don't judge Koreans for it.

You are right and I humbly apologise. I tend to be over-sensitive when it comes to our country and soldiers being criticised because I have also been treated badly simply because I am American...not usually by Koreans.
Thank you for mentioning that I was once mis-judged. Since there was no other feed-back on that issue, I falsely assumed that no one understood my side. At that time, I had asked for help and got none except from the vet and Joo. I haven't been back to the shelter since then.

There's no point in being overly sensitive about our country or the troops. If people have an ignorant view of Americans then instead of getting defensive and angry, show them that they're wrong. People have a certain view of Americans for a reason. The stereotypes are true. You have to prove that there are other people besides those stereotypes...

But we can all try to change the bad things, even if it is culture. I guess we have to be careful how we do it though. Being too aggressive can get the poor dog killed by an irate, power-hungry owner.

Marine Major Brian Dennis holds his adopted dog, Nubs, near the Iraq-Jordan border. Dennis rescued the abused and injured dog from becoming one more victim in the war in Iraq .
Forbidden by military rules from keeping a dog in a war zone, Dennis had four days to find a way to get Nubs shipped to his hometown, St. Pete Beach, Fl. The dog is expected to arrive on Friday Feb. 22.

Maybe so. I guess I just don't agree with forcing my beliefs on other people necessarily. For now, dog meat is still illegal. A few foreigners making a fuss over it isn't going to close down the boshintang restaurants and stop the abuse from happening. The change needs to come from within Korea by Koreans and from what we all see.. there's complacency about it and they really just don't care. They'd rather protest US beef imports over something that happened over a year ago (and the infected cow was from Canada haha).
luvadog
07-01-2008, 07:55 PM
Was it really only a year ago? I was in Montana in 2003 when they had the case in Alberta, just over the border. Then some time shortly after, we had a case in America. Maybe I lost track of the time. Anyway, you are the only other person who's mentioned that it was from Canada and I keep telling my friends that it came from there. Of course they are closer to England than we are so it's logical to track it back to them too.
Last year there was a big stink about the animal abuse in CA with the downer cows being electric prodded, poked and rammed with forklifts to their slaughter. The youtube video of old dairy cows walking their "last mile" on their hocks was sickening and really looked like mad cow. But it wasn't. It was mad people...crazy people. But they did mention that of the 15 cases, 12 were from downer cows.

Historically FORCING change on another culture won't work, I hate the dog meat industry, but its the cruelty that really bothers me, rather than the consumption. However, westerners can't just wounder in and tell them to stop because its cruel, they have to come to that conclusion on their own or it will never stop. Trying to force change usually makes people more resistant, more likely to defend their culture. When I became a vegetarian at 12 years old, my mom said "You can have your own ideas, but so can I and you have no right to force them on me or anyone else, if you want to do this I'll respect your decision as long as you respect mine". I have never forced it on anyone and yet I have manged to convert several members of my family simply by example. I think that the change is coming in this country, I know A LOT of Koreans who love animals, it may take some time but I think it will happen.
I think that most military/police officer types fit into two types, people who want to make the world better, and people who get off on violence. I'd like to believe that most people fit into the first category-that would be why he was punished so harshly. But I'm also naive I desperately want to believe that most people are good, sometimes the only comfort I have when I see things like this video is knowing that there are people working against people like him.

Or look at the successful adoption stories. That's why I started the new link "Real soldiers." A few months ago I was educating myself on the dog meat thing and watching the videos and reading the horror stories. I wondered what I could do and felt so helpless, wanting to jump into the computer and grab the poor dog. For that week and thereafter for quite some time, I was a basket case. (I don't know how to make baskets so I had to get it together.) ooooh...I've been an English teacher tooo long.
