Great news! Tim (http://www.animalrescuekorea.org/forums/member.php?u=11) has heard from Lt. Com. Lee....

The Daejeon Council has agreed to extend the date for Mrs Jung to remove her dogs from the shelter for 5 months until 30 July 2008.

We had a good weekend for fosters and fosters last Saturday & Sunday, so we estimate there are less than 110 dogs there now, down from around 210 in June last year.

So we will continue with the weekly trips to Daejeon every Saturday (http://www.animalrescuekorea.org/forums/showthread.php?t=404), hopefully we can continue to adopt or foster dogs every weekend to reduce the number even further.

I should also emphasise that many of the "easier" dogs have been adopted or fostered and we are left with a substantial number of shy dogs. These dogs benefit greatly from volunteers visiting them as regularly as possible to either take them for walks (if they are confident enough to do so) or to carry them while we walk the other dogs. This is the only way to socialise some of these dogs and we have successfully adopted perhaps 20 dogs from the shelter who would otherwise still be there if it wasn't for the efforts of the volunteers to bring them out of their shells and build their confidence around people.

Attached are pics of just a few of these dogs that we have adopted purely because the volunteers have persisted with them.

Anyone who has time to come to the shelter on a Saturday (or any other day that you are free) you are most welcome, please be aware you are making a tremendous difference to the future of these dogs.

Best
Tim

This is so great! I'll be down next weekend bringing leashes and harnesses. I'm trying to get some friends to donate a bit of money as well. My friend and I are definitely excited about coming down and I can't wait to see some of these dogs again... it's been too long...

Yay! I am so thrilled about this news. My buddy who adopted and fostered two dogs last weekend had posted some pictures on his facebook of Deajeon, and his friend said "you can't save the world!" and my friend replied "maybe not but I'm sure as hell gonna try!"...Seeeee what trying gets you! 110 dogs get another chance and more than 100 dogs have real homes...this is a very good thing! and I am very proud to be associated in even a very marginal way with all of you who made this happen!

Alibuch...I would love to join you sometime in Deajeon, I'm broke until pay day but I would love to get back up there and get to walking/bathing some of those doggies. It would be great if we could co-ordinate our visits:)

I guess it depends on one's definition of "world". From the perspective of the dogs who have homes now, I'd say their world has been saved! :)

I have a small suggestion that may help. Not sure how familiar you are with the military community but we have a network on tv for the armed forces, AFN. I was thinking maybe if you can send me some information about the need for help in Deajon and with fostering I can see about putting something up on the AFN network. Not sure if it will work but I would be glad to try.:D

Whoohooo! That's great news on the extension. We will definitely stop by again to help out. Armywife0820, that would be an awesome idea, to get the AFN involved. A lot of families on base don't know about the animal shelters that are close by. We live in Osan and my husband and i organized a group on base to help out. Unfortunately, the guys couldn't adopt or foster any of the animals because majority of them are dorming, but everyone had an awesome time walking and playing with the dogs. I know AFN recently went out to the new Boeun Shelter with the vet volunteers in Osan. It's a new animal shelter but far from where we are. AFN is definitely a a great way to let the military community know about the shelter in Daejeon. I'm sure Tim and Annie will fill you in with more information. They are great at organizing volunteers to help out at the shelter:)

There was an article in the Korean Herald today about the shelter's extension. It was lovely. And there was also a large picture of Angel, one of Scarlet's foster dogs! :)
