The former Daejeon shelter of Mrs.Jung was shut down in Dec. 2008 due to Daejeon city's decision and then 72 dogs were able to be relocated at Asan shelter with ARK's dedicated support. Although Asan shelter gave them a second chance to live on, it was not a suitable place for them as most of the Daejeon dogs are very elderly and scared and were so much attached to Mr.Jung. What they needed the most was Mrs.Jung's company and individual care than a place to run around.

Finally 29 small dogs left at Asan were moved back to Mr.Jung's new shelter called "Daejeon Paws" on Mar. 29th 2010.
Even though the new shelter is not quite ready, all of them looked so much comfortable and happier than before.

For these amazing dogs that spent their whole life at the shelter but don't have a good chance to be adopted for the future, wouldn't you be generous and kind-hearted?

As Mrs.Jung has to start from nothing at the moment, any kind of your support will be so much appreciated. The new shelter used to be a worn-out house, there're millions of parts to be repaired and rebuilt. Also unexpected medical expenses needs to be supported as well.

Whoever wants to help "Daejeon Paws", please make a donation to the below account. Your donation will help to build a fence so that they can have a place to run around and install a window that'll allow sunlight to come into the room etc. Regular donation can be extremly helpful to cover the medical costs in the future. ( you're asked to mention it's for Daejeon Paws)

1002-240-455293 (Wooribank, 박현주)

You can also donate any kind of doggy related stuffs such as peepads, treats, toys, blankets etc. If you can collect newspapers, it'll be really useful too. You can send the donation to the address below.

Daejeon si Seo gu Galma 1 dong 425-9 beonji (Postal Code: 305-768)
Mrs. Jung, Nang young, 011-430-6922

If you have time, you can always visit this place to volunteer in helingp her repairing the shelter and playing & walking with the dogs.. Please see the attached direction to the "Daejeon Paws". If you take a taxi from Daejeon st. , it'll take about 15 minutes. I'll look up the local bus route and post it later.

Further information can be discussed by emailing at ddambbang@hotmail.com or calling 010-3805-4433(Park Hyun Joo)

Thank you so much for your kind attention.. Your help can make these dogs' life much easier!!

I think it's 15 min walk from Galm Subway Station. If you take a bus no.613 from Daejeon st., it'll take you to a bus stop called "Galma APT" which is only about 5 min walk distance..

You can see the detailed direction from the attached PDF file..

On May, 1st, 2010 we visited Mrs. Jung and her babies in Daejeon. It was lovely! Mrs. Jung is awesome! Place is clean and warm, dogs are clean and relaxed, dog's dresses are clean. Thank you Mrs. Jung for taking such a good care of doggies! No any dark cages!

Remember our old boy?

And Halmoni is there too :) Safe and warm with her meds and special food

Mrs. Jung needs our help to be able to help dogs. It doesn't have to be much. For example she always needs:

- Daejeon city garbage bags (big size),
- toilet paper,
- old newspapers,
- dog food,
- detergent,
- dish soap,
- eggs.

Does it cost much? No, it doesn't. If you can't come to Daejeon and bring it with you, send money to 1002-240-455293 (Wooribank, 박현주) and let me know what should we buy. We will buy it and bring it to "Daejeon Paws" shelter.

Yes, of course. You can find Mrs. Jung's address in Sylvia's post (the 1st one here).

Hey, I know no one has posted on this in a while, but I am a co leader for Junior Girl Scout Troop #10 and we are about to start a project to help out Daejeon Paws. We plan to raise money and supplies needed to keep the shelter in working order and help out the pups.

I am so excited to get started.

We are going to Daejeon Paws animal shelter on coming Saturday after visiting Asan animal shelter. It understandable that not everyone can come all the way to Daejeon BUT if you have some stuff you don't need and would like to donate PLEASE bring it to Seoul Station and give it to volunteers or bring it to Cheonan-Asan KTX Station and give it to us. Mention to volunteers that it's for Daejeon Paw shelter.
We will collect all that and bring to Daejeon Paws ourselves.

Soap,
dish soap,
blankets (used or new),
old newspapers,
toilet paper,
pee pads (only new :p),
raw eggs,
dog food,
treats,
towels (used or new),
DONATIONS (to improve area for arriving Jindos)
and etc.

Thank you in advance!

Would anyone like to visit Daejeon Paws on Christmas? Ms. Jung will be going to church in the morning, but she welcomes visitors any time after 1 p.m. I was originally going to suggest a "party," but there isn't really any place to party so I hope a few people will come out just to wish Ms. Jung a happy holiday and spend time with the dogs. Eight special Jindos and many little dogs would love to have visitors, I'm sure.

I am sure the dogs would think Santa had come for them at last if volunteers were able to stop by (perhaps with treats!) and spend time with them.
Also, it would be great if someone could go and take some new pictures and update any threads of the Daejeon dogs.

I don't know where the best place to post this is, but feel free to re-post anywhere.

I went to Daejeon Paws on Saturday with a few friends, and here are the pics (http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=278938&id=501939772&l=21675e6f3b). We didn't know any of their names, so most of the captions are using names we made up on the spot.

I was at Daejeon Paws that morning for 2 hours....here are the names of the dogs I know, that way their pictures can be posted to their threads.

picture 9,10,11,12,37,38,40 - Hamlet
picture 27 - Cloud (both of them)
picture 29,31,32,34,35,36,37,38,39,41 - name unknown...jindo puppy, was rescued from one of her neighbours who basically fed him and his brothers and sisters nothing. Mrs. Jung and one of her friends took all 4 puppies away in the middle of the night. I think she has someone in mind for him/her, but I'm not 100% sure.
picture 48 - Cody
picture 49 - Kangaroo
picture 51 - Samsuni
picture 52 - Ilsuni (I think or maybe Isuni) Angels Momma
picture 53 - Angel

I hope that this helps out! Thanks for going to play with the puppies! They really needed it!

I want to help out at Daejeon paws - do they only have dogs or cats also? I can help out in the week sometimes. I have heard many conflicting things - how many shelters are there in Daejeon? I have heard that there is one near Yuseong also - is this correct? do the people there speak a little English?

1) I want to help out at Daejeon paws - do they only have dogs or cats also?
Only dogs.

2) I can help out in the week sometimes.
It would be awesome.

3) I have heard many conflicting things - how many shelters are there in Daejeon?
A few (one city pound + private no kill shelters).

4) I have heard that there is one near Yuseong also - is this correct?
Correct. Daejeon city pound (kill shelter).

5) do the people there speak a little English?
Do you mean Daejeon city pound? I heard one person there speaks English but if you would like to visit and volunteer at Daejeon city pound it would be better if you contact someone who already volunteers there.

"Daejeon Paws" is no kill private shelter in Daejeon city. It would be great if you could help out there. Further information can be discussed by emailing at ddambbang@hotmail.com or calling Park Hyun Joo at 010-3805-4433 (in English).

I volunteer a lot at Daejeon City Shelter, the pound, near National Cemetery. They have regular volunteers from the public schools now, so they're pretty organized about it and you can walk the dogs or visit the cats any time between 1 and 5 p.m. The vet, John, and a worker named Sophia both speak very decent English. Message me privately if you want me to bring you out there sometime.
I don't know of other private shelters, just Paws. Mrs. Jung needs the help financially, but she didn't need us to do any walking when we went. I don't know if that's often the case, but I like to take the dogs out for exercise when I volunteer. In any case, the dogs love to see people as often as possible!

lcavegirl

The only reason that she didn't need any walking on Saturday, was because I had gotten there before you and walked all the jindos...and left before you arrived. But the jindos should get more walks than what they do right now.

The one jindo, Cody has heartworms so if we can get donations together to help her treatment. The vet is giving her a huge discount already, but it is going to cost her roughly 350,000 KRW.

Correct. Daejeon city pound (kill shelter).

I just want to say that the city shelter is not a "kill shelter". They don't euthanize unless the animal is in pain. Plus, they don't have a time-limit, so yeah, not a kill shelter. Yes, a lot of animals get sick (just like there are a lot of viruses going around in any shelter), but it's still not like they were put down after 10 days or anything.
Just wanted to clarify because the shelter really tried to bring down the euthanasia numbers and they are trying to do some good~

Are you sure that information is up to date? It's had so many changes of management lately. The last I heard, the city had taken over from a group of vets who had taken over from a private contractor.

I know this is a thread about Daejeon Paws, but...
I've been volunteering regularly at the City Shelter for a year, and even more since January, when City Hall took over. I can tell you that they are BETTER than the "vets". The affiliation you speak of was with Africa Animal Clinic, who gave discounts for rescued animals; they didn't exactly own the shelter. It has been in desperate need of financial help, and the city has stepped up. If you go to the shelter now, you will notice an organized office, two full-time staff on hand who speak English, plus workers and many school-aged volunteers. They have all new supplies, fences, and are breaking ground for re-building what were once just barns, so that they DON'T have to euthanize for capacity. I'm not sure where the negative vibe about the City Shelter started, but there has been nothing but improvement, every time I've been.

I thought it was more than just a clinic providing discounts ... I thought a vets' association held the pound contract at one point? I've never been there myself and don't know why you would construe my question as "negative." I just want to be sure all the information on ARK is as accurate and up to date as possible.

As for Daejeon Paws, I think a group is hoping to visit on March 12. It would be great if new people could join. The Jindos especially need walks, and many of the smaller dogs could use socialization even if they're too shy to walk on a leash. Taking pictures of the dogs and sharing them is also a great way to let people know they're still available for adoption or fostering.

No, but they're next-door neighbours now.
