The first Daejeon meeting on April 22nd went really well. Six new friends talked for nearly 3 hours and shared our thoughts on the problems (pet abandonment, lack of owner education, chaining, etc) in our area and what we can do to help (adoption promotion, spay/neuter program, fundraising or volunteering for reputable shelters). We're meeting again this coming Sunday to continue our discussion and also to plan some trips.

If you are interested in fostering, fundraising, volunteering at a shelter, raising awareness, writing articles, designing Tshirts, making posters, helping homeless or chained animals in your neighbourhood, or anything else along these lines, please join us. We would really like to meet more like-minded individuals who want to take action!

Meeting time: Sunday May 13th, 2pm

Meeting place: Nancie's house, Hannam University area, Daejeon

Our second meeting was great, although no new members joined us this time... Maybe next time!

Here is our list of tasks to complete before our next meeting:

1) Make a Friendly Dog Care Flyer

Mark's super awesome idea was to make a friendly and helpful basic care flyer to tape to the doghouses of chained up dogs. Something not critical, possibly with cartoons or images, to let dogowners know to leave fresh water and provide shade, that chicken and fish bones can hurt their dog, and that cheap heartworm treatment is available at vet offices, etc.

The catch is that after the English version is drafted we need someone to translate it into Korea. Know anyone who can help us with that?

2) Build the Links Section in the Animal Lovers in Korea Yahoo Group Page

I've started working on this already. If anyone has good links to add, please join and add them here:

3) Visit the KAPS Animal Shelter

We all want to head down to Daegu soon. We hope to be able to bathe and take extra cute photos of the adoptable dogs so that we can help promote their adoption. Our tentative trip date is June 9th or 10th. If anyone would like to join us let me know so I can contact the KAPS director in advance of our trip.

4) Find an Animal Shelter in Daejeon

I've put one of my uni students to the task of making calls and researching local shelters for us to volunteer at right here in Daejeon. One of the Gu Office city animal control centers was rude to him, but he found another and is waiting for an email response to his questions. I hope to share good news soon.

5) Start a Pet Sitter List

We hope to collect a list of people who are willing to pet sit and/or who are in need of a pet sitter. The invitation to sign up will appear in the Animal Lovers in Korea yahoo group shortly.

Phewf! That seems like a lot and yet not that much at the same time.
