I am trying to figure out how to introduce my hyper happy 8 month old jindo/corgie mix to my 14 year old cat. So far she's fine until he gets hyper. RIght now they are "talking" thru the gate andwe let her sniff around his stuff. Any ideas or are we on the right track? Also how long can we expect to have to keep them in seperat places.
The cat was a stray that we've had as an "only child" for about 8 years and I got the pup in Korea and have raised him as an "only child" but he's used to cats.

I suggest a two-prong approach. First, tire him out with exercise, then he will be less hyper, giving you more time for her to get to know him. Most dogs are under exercised.
Second, if the hyperness is due to him becoming over stimulated, find the distance between him and the cat where he settles a bit (that is getting him under his threshold) and then work him back towards her. Have him do nose/paw touches to your hand, watch you, ect as you slowly decrease the distance. That method works for a variety of situations.
I'd suggest making sure Kitty always has a place of her own that she can go to, but that he can't follow. My approach would be to resume her access and give her the dog-proof kitty space. The pup would be either tethered to me or crated if I couldn't closely supervise (same as I do for housebreaking). It is going to come down to how well he understands cat manners and exactly what he's doing when he's hyper. If he's apt to run over her (not chasing, but normal zoomies), I'd be working heavily on redirection before he gets to the point he's zooming.

thanks, I've been doing it right than, wasn't sure though. My parents said they are starting to get better. she get's to have the bedrooms and he's not allowed in them since he will destroy/chew/teeth on most things.
He starts "bouncing" and trying to get her to play. She's just not used to other animals and when she was a stray the neighbor boy used to have his tiny dog chase her.
Thanks for the advice. They are never alone together at the moment.
