Hi, Now I know I'm not the only crazy person in Korea. haha. I have quite a brood myself.

I used to have a yellow-nape Amazon and just wanted to let you know, you should find an avian vet and have the King Parrot checked and vaccinated as soon as possible. They actually do blood tests and I can't remember all the vaccines, but psitticosis is one of them. That's the one that people can get from birds and the main indicator is eye discharge. Any diahrea is a bad sign. Plz read this: http://www.birdsnways.com/articles/psittico.htm

King Parrots...which one is s/he?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Australian_King_Parrot
If I were rich, I'd buy him! I'd love another bird.

Also, when the wings are clipped, make sure someone knows what they are doing. If you cut a blood feather, one with a vein, then he could bleed to death unless you pull it immediately. It's not the usual case and I used to cut Rowdy's feathers all the time. http://www.cockatielcottage.net/feathers.html

It would be too hard to take all of them to a vet, but I think a stool sample from the birds could be checked for psitticosis.

The peachface is probably a lovebird.

Wow...you have a big heart!

That was me that posted that ad. I was going to post it here with some changes but now I don't need to! hehe

Luvadog, thankyou for not berating me like those on eslcafe. What I did really was done with the best intentions. Although it turns out it probably wasn't the best thing to do given that I'll soon be relocating to England. It's such a shame that I have to give them away.

THE PRICES ARE FLEXIBLE! If you like the parrot, please let me know what you can pay. I'm trying to make back most of the money that I spent on them because I'm moving to another country, but I understand that this may not happen. The most important thing for me is that they go to good homes, with people who love animals. They are all lovely animals. The rabbits, mice and birds kept in single cages are quiet and easy to look after. The birds in the double cages are a bit noisier, but I'm sure with bigger cages and some more toys, they'd be great pets.

If I have to seperate them I will, but I'd really like them to at least be in groups of two or more. They really like each others company, and in the colder weather they like to snuggle up to each other, even though I do my best to keep it warm. This could possibly be because they were left on display outside in the freezing cold and needed to keep warm.

About the king parrot, I'm not sure if that's what it is, I'm going by a suggestion.

Here are some pictures:

Please contact me if you're at all interested as I have to start preparing to leave (with visa and everything) and don't want to leave these guys at home for ages when I have to go to Seoul. Let me know what price you can pay.

If you're not interested but know of a good shelter that would be willing to take them in and look after them, please let me know. Contact me at alaisrose@gmail.com, PM me here, or call 010 - 2259 - 4498. I'm unavailable on weekdays between 1:30 - 7:20, but can be reached at any other time.

If I were you, I'd definitely separate the rats, mice and guinea pigs. I had some issues last year when I got 2 piggies that turned out to be a male and a female...They got babies very quickly, but separated the dad (thinking no more babies). What a surprise it was when the boys reproduced with the mom at 2 weeks old!!

I just think you'll end up with sooo many as rodents reproduce so fast....

Anyone know of any shelters? There doesn't seem to be much interest from anyone (except for the parrot) so maybe I should just give them to a shelter, if possible. Again, I live in Osan so the shelter would have to help me in transporting them.

Hi Bloodrose,

No problem. I read some of those comments and know what it feels like.:(

I found the bird. It's an Eclectus male.
http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20070919141707AAh7Cw8

Read what she says about diet. They are prone to liver disease if fed a too fatty diet, seeds, etc. but that would be long term. I used to give my parrot chicken because I worried about him getting enough protein.

I think this is a really nice bird. I think you should stay in Korea longer. :)

I really feel sorry for you and your plight. You love animals and did something. Let's go from there.

I found this in my search. http://www.greenpeople.org/webpage.cfm?memid=2246&pmtlevel=0&linkpage=http%3A%2F%2Fwww%2Ekoreananimals%2Eorg

I looked at the embargos, and if the bird originated from the USA, then you can take it home with a 30 day quarantine and proper health certificates.

I was in touch with a rescue person who said they were banned from Korea. Maybe it's IAKA. But If we can find a shelter, then I can help with transportation. My car is small, so there's a limit to what we can carry.

Surely there's an aviary shelter somewhere? Can someone else help?

Hi Annie, What did you do with all the babies? Where might she take them?

One idea I thought of is to send a note home to your students mothers (translated by a friend) saying you saved them and will give one to their child if they get a cage. There's obviously a market for them and maybe a few mothers will say ok.

Another idea is to hang out at Emart/petshops/animal areas with the note/flyer and give one to anyone looking at the animals/guinea pigs etc.

This would serve 2 purposes (kill 2 birds with one stone--pun intended): find them a home and take the business away from a merchant.

Luvadog, the idea of giving them to students had crossed my mind, but the students that have shown interest in pets are the students I wouldn't even trust to hold a pencil. Whilst I love Korea and the Korean people, the way I've seen them treat animals when it comes to pets leaves a lot to be desired. And whilst I know they'll eventually have to be split up, I personally don't have it in me to do it. The way they interact with each other is adorable. The family of gerbils (I think that's what they are...could be rats) truly act like a little family. And when the pet store tried to seperate them, the parents went ballistic, trying to reach for them. It broke my heart.

I deeply appreciate your offer of help and may very well take you up on it. Whereabouts do you live? If the (no kill) shelters not too far (an hour or less) from where I live, then we could do two trips perhaps. Now if we can just find a shelter......I will definitely keep your other ideas in mind though. And about sending birds to the US, well I'm from Australia so I'm not quite sure what the deal would be. I've not done much research yet, but perhaps bird flu might make them a bit wary of transporting birds. I wish I could take all my pets but think it might be frowned upon in the UK customs/quarantine office.

I really wish I could've made the money back that I spent on them as I really do need it for my move, but alas, it seems no one is interested. And my love of animals far exceeds my love of money. Keep me posted if you find out about shelters. I'm hoping to move them asap.

I'm just wondering how you're gonna do given you only have 2 months. I agree with you and would worry about rehoming my pets. Luckily, I'm keeping them. I'm sitting here with one of my yorkies on my lap and I thought Chunsa was perfect when I got her. But she's so afraid of everything and a little psycho when it comes to being touched and groomed. She was obviously been mishandled by some hyper kid. She's slowly calming down but it breaks my heart.

I am fostering a little 9 mo old poodle, a beautiful little girl who was tortured by her owner's husband with cigarettes. I am committed to taking any pet home with me if I take it in, but I'm amazed that no one has shown an interest in her. I'll find a great home for her in America...no problem. Although scarred, she's perfect.

But I can take the dogs home. I worry about your birds especially because of the embargo. I'd take them home if I could but it looks like the door is slammed shut on that possibility. And quarantine would cost more than most people can afford.

Is there any possibility you might stay? Maybe later, they will lift the embargo. But not quickly.

BloodRose

I sympathise with you about the dogs. My parents have two dogs, both of them rescued. They're so happy now compared to what they were.

And I'm afraid I can't stay any longer. I've been looking to go to England for quite some time but haven't been able to get a job in my field. So I want to accept the offer while it's there because I don't know when or if there will be another chance. It totally sucks that I've had to decide this way.

And it does seem a (no kill) shelter might be the easiest and quickest way. I've pretty much abandoned hope of getting any of my money back. Now I just need help in finding one that'll take them. I think if I didn't need to move so quickly, I could spend more time finding homes for them. But I think most of the shelters here look after animals really well.

So please, does anybody know of any shelters?

Hi Annie, What did you do with all the babies? Where might she take them?

I got lucky and got them adopted. I put a poster at my vet, and some of my students adopted too. It's hard to screen for rodents though...And it took a while before they all got adopted. I kept 3 males (got them checked by the vet to make sure that time...)

I unfortunately don't know of any shelter that take in rodents or birds, maybe Karama?

karama does take in rodents, birds etc. but i am pretty sure they do euthanize... maybe you can ask one of your korean friends to call and ask them to set up an aggreement..like maybe ask them to help you adopt them out, and when it comes time for you to leave..maybe leave them there and pay them a monthly fee for taking care of them? just a thought im not sure how it might work out...... OH! maybe you can ask one of your korean friends to look for rodent/bird loving cafes on naver, im pretty sure someone will adopt one of your little fellas... hope something works out for you!

I live in Daejeon. Now where's Asan? Point me in that direction...haha.

I don't think you'll get much money back. It would take some time, even adopting them out.

Sarah and Annie had some good ideas. Posting at vets, and maybe Karma would post them? How would she do that Sarah?

BloodRose

I'm actually in Osan hehe. Near Pyeongtaek and Suwon etc. But maybe the Asan shelter is worth the trip if they'll take them. Yeah, I'm not going to get any money for them but I'm determined to find them a no kill shelter. I asked at the vets in my area and they redirected me to a hospital in Seoul so I'm going to call them tomorrow and see if they have any ideas. If worse comes to worse, I'll call Karama. But it'll be a last resort. I've asked my Korean friends to have a look around and see what they can find as well.

I also just want to thank those on this forum that are helping me. After initially posting on eslcafe and getting berated and judged harshly, it was so nice to come over to this forum and have sweet animal loving people that were willing to help me instead of add to my problem. I deeply appreciate all your help!

If you find out anything else, keep me updated.:)

The Asan shelter doesn't have any birds or rodents...Plus, we have to pay a monthly fee for the animals we bring in...

I can take all of the birds. But, there is a catch. Actually, a couple. I can't keep them permanently, I can't pick them up and I can't pay you for them. I'm an animal lover, but hubby isn't. I have to pay for what they need with my monthly budget which is $300. We do have a car, but I don't have a license here and hubby won't drive to pick them up. I'm American and we plan to go back in a year and a half, so that's why I can't keep them. I did have an african grey, but I made the extremely hard decision to find a home for him. Because of the embargo, when we go back in a year and a half, he wouldn't have been able to come. I honestly wouldn't count on them lifting it any time soon. For a couple of years it was just a temporary ban, but about 6 months ago, they changed it to an embargo. I don't think they would change a temporary ban that had been in place for a few years into an embargo just to lift it in a year. Anyway, here's what I can do for them. I can take care of them and convert them to a healthy diet. I can tame the bigger guys and turn them into pets. If they are not happy being a pet, then they will go as pairs in bigger cages. I think the ideal thing would to be a pet, though. That way, they won't have to spend their whole lives in cages. There are a lot of animal lovers in Korea, and with the help of my hubby I can find a great person to adopt them. In fact, it was with the help of my hubby that I found a great home for my bird and I definitely wouldn't let him go to just anyone. I'm a housewife, and don't have any kids, so I have all day to spend taming and training. I do have 3 dogs, but they have been around birds and aren't aggressive. In fact, they were kind of scared of my grey because he liked to bite them... Anyway, let me know if I can help. Sorry that I can't help get your money back, but I can use my time to find them good homes. I live in dongtan which is about 15 minutes away from suwon.

Hmm... I offer to help and suddenly the posts stop... Odd... I really do want to help. I would hate for the birds to spend their whole life in a cage. Or worse, live a short, miserable life in a tiny cage outside only to freeze to death once winter comes like the poor cockatiel that I didn't help. I feel really bad about that bird and would like to help these guys. Animal shelters are doing an ok job here, but they don't spend that much time on "other" animals. They just let them go to whoever walks in the door. The finches I will get a bigger cage for them and find a good home. I will first try to get them into an aviary, but if that doesn't work they will go to someone's home and be kept inside. The lovebirds and cockatiels and other guys I will tame and find pet homes for them. I have tamed many many birds, so I have experience with that. I will also convert them to a healthy diet because just seeds are not good for even them. The parrot you said already has a home, but if he doesn't have a good home by the time you leave, he is more than welcomed to come here. I got tons of bites from my grey when we were becoming friends, so I'm not looking forward to another parrot bite, but I think he is the most important. Spend your time finding a good home for him since he can live so long and it would just be horrible to live in that tiny cage with no friends or toys. Or worse, be passed from home to home because he's too loud or has started plucking and isn't pretty anymore. Even serial killers are treated better than that by other people and they kill people! His only crime is being pretty. Eclectus parrots are said to be the smartest of parrots. Do a little research on them and you will see how important it is to find a good home for him. If you can, buy him a bigger cage and some toys before he goes to a new home. My grey had a much bigger cage with toys and he was only in the cage at night when it was time to sleep. Imagine spending 24/7 in a closet with nothing to do to entertain yourself and you will start to get a picture of what the bird is going through. On most weekends, when we went on outings, he came along. He had a harness and loved going to new places! Please make sure your parrot goes to a home where he will at least get toys and time out of the cage. And start changing his diet now. Seed only diets are very bad for an eclectus. Also, if he's not already tame, work on taming him. I have nothing but time and would welcome the challenge of taming multiple birds. Since I don't have my grey or any friends that live nearby, (I just moved a couple of months ago), it's really kinda lonely here. Plus, since we will be here at least another year and a half, maybe longer, I have plenty of time to do this and find a home for them. We also live in a 3 bedroom very soundproof apartment. The neighbor has two young kids and I never hear them unless I go out in the hall. Then I can hear all the yelling and screaming that they do, but the sound never comes into our apartment. One room is our bedroom. One room is the dogs' room. The last room we don't use, so I was going to use it for the birds. It is farthest away from the front door and our neighbor, so they shouldn't cause any noise problems. If you like, you can come visit our place to see how it is and to meet me. I think we live kinda close.

Not to seem obsessive, but I thought I would identify the animals, so that you can do some research, and at least tell people what they are. I also highly recommend at the very least getting bigger and better cages for everyone. The first cage has zebra finches on the left side and red crowned parakeets or Kākārikis on the right. The second cage has java sparrows on the left and cockatiels on the right. The third cage has love birds on the left and parakeets on the right. The forth cage is a parakeet and the fifth a cockatiel. The first rodent cage has dwarf hamsters. The second and third are syrian hamsters. The syrian hamsters need to be separated when the babies are weaned because they are solitary animals and fight when kept together. The other hamsters do well in groups, but it would be wise to separate the sexes.

All of a sudden, out of nowhere, I've been getting interest from people wanting to buy the animals! Sorry I've been gone for a few days, I've been quite busy at work. To anyone else who is interested in buying any, I can include a cage in the price. Get in quick! hehe
