Mango Mom's is in Galma dong, Daejeon, Korea. It's up in the hills behind Galma Apartment bldg 102 in some old buildings. At first you might think no one is there until you hear some muffled barking coming from one of the buildings. You see a combination of dumpy broken down sheds, construction materials and workers, and white concrete bldgs that (with imagination) resemble something like an Italian villa.
I see a lot of potential here and the staff treat the dogs with the best of love and care. They are warm and cozy inside, well fed and petted despite the cold outside...except for a few cute junkyard dogs outside (don't know whose they are.) And up some steps, there's a rooftop exercise area that's pretty big.
A lot of the shihtzus are being shipped to Japan to a lady who rehomes them there. There were several going very soon. They also have 9 Jindo-X-Chow puppies who are absolutely adorable...really-really adorable!! (I will post them under adoptable dogs.) They are a bit desperate since the puppies will be medium/stout and are growing at warp speed. **!!**PLEASE HELP !!** The number of dogs is limited since it's in the city. Fosters are welcome.
I think with some cleaning up, this could be a terrific place. Anyone want to go there to volunteer? We can get some directions and it's only about 15 minutes from Daejeon Station. Thanks a million.

Thanks for the pictures, it looks like a wonderful place. But why does the white dog in that last photo have those funny patches around her eyes? Are those natural?

I was so surprised. This was my first time there and it's very spacious and there are places that could be fixed up with a little muscle and TLC.
I'd guess the dark patches around his eyes are from tearing. Sometimes it's in the breeding (I was told) but I'd say with proper grooming/bathing, it would eventually be white.
Here's some more tears...crying out to be loved and adopted.:(
These few ladies are so dedicated and continuing with very little help.
Many many THANKS to Lt.Com Lee for bringing this place to light so it can develop and continue.

Look at picture #3. Each dog has a collar with Mango Mom's phone number on it. You can see her number if you click on and enlarge the picture. When they're walked we have to check and make sure the collar is on.

Hi, Sandy. I am Hannah. You described very well Mango Mom's shelter.
I am a volunteer of that place. We really need more volunteers to play with or walk dogs. Our financial condition is not so good enough to hire workers. We welcome foreign volunteers with open arms.
The why-why-why barking dog (as Sandy calls it) is a Jindo pup that is owned by an elderly couple that lives in another part of the building complex the shelter is in. There is also a full grown Jindo (shelter dog) that lives just behind the pup's area.

I regreted that i sould help the mango mom in Dae-Jeon(she is over 60')
People said " she is a little bit stubborn, selfish " sometimes.
But i think she really loves the dogs more then me and us" and she also need
our attention.
If i have a chance i'll help her from the bottom of my heart.
We moved the Mrs Jung's shelter now and keep going to taking care the A-San shelter
I moved to Mok-Po now. i have little chance to visit the mango mom's shelter.
I hope you would help the mango mom's shelter.
I always appreciate to all the volunteers(gethering to help Mrs Jung's shelter)
The God knows your leve and efforts.
cheers & happy new years ^^

Dec.27, 2008.......This is Min Hwa, one of the volunteers. She was there all by herself, cleaning and petting each of the dogs and puppies. Her English is excellent so she can tell you all about Mango Moms place and work with you.

I couldn't believe it! I was dumpster-diving at one of the apt complexes, picking up another cabinet for M&M's. And this little old lady with a mink scarf-obviously rich-comes up to give me a hand. Then I said wait! I had to get a picture of this...once in a lifetime. A couple young guys came by and took the pics.
The cabinets make nice little doggie huts and they love the privacy.

Hi Hannah, Thanks kiddo! It's fun treasure hunting for the doggies.
Here is the Korean website for Mango Mom's;
http://cafe.daum.net/dogsbackhome
As mentioned in an earlier post, 20 dogs are scheduled to go to Japan this year: five are scheduled to go at then end of July, five on August 15 and the rest are not scheduled yet.
The big Jindo "Buddy"(San-do-ri) was moved to the Bo-eun shelter for big dogs.
Mango Mom has been ill and unable to come to the shelter for a few months now. Other volunteers have been filling in and taking care of the dogs' daily needs.
The shelter has another litter of puppies(see adoption post for Hodoo and her babies) that will be available around the middle of September.
There will be a Bazaar to raise funds on the last Saturday of each month from the end of September in Kalma park near the subway entrance.

Who should we contact if we want to go there?
There are usually one or two volunteers there from about 11 in the morning to 5 in the evening, but it is not guaranteed that someone will be there. If you know where it is(I think you do Annie), you can PM me and I'll either give one of the primary volunteers your number or I can ask if I can give you one of their phone numbers. I'll talk to the one I usually meet with today or tomorrow to see if I can post her new hand phone number. Her nickname is 'Sang-cho's mom'. The number Sandy posted for her was cancelled.
Here are some recent pics of Mango Mom's. The first is a new addition named Bok-shil who was owned by the shelter's landlord. When she got sick the owner was going to put her down, so the shelter took her and had her treated.
The next pic is of Rudolph the special needs poodle puppy from last winter---now he is the second largest boy at the shelter and he really looks like a poodle now. When he first came everyone thought he was some kind of mix.
The fifth pic is just a group photo--you can see rudolph and Hodoo side by side at the gate. They may be sort of a couple(luckily he is neutered).
The last pic is of Jong-guk who is very friendly but looks aggressive when you first meet him and Het-sal-ee who was recently treated for a bad ear infection. He used to get really upset if you even came near him and would snap if you came too close to his head. To pick him up you had to move very slowly and make sure no others dogs were within a couple feet. Today he was jumping around begging for attention.
Good and bad news from Mango Mom's.
Mango Mom visited for the first time in months to oversee the installation of an ADT security system. She has been very ill for a while and is feeling a little better. KAPES had new floor covering put in and new wallpaper will follow soon.
On the sad side, the old stiff-moving Schnauzer named Shu-do-ri passed away recently. His owner had kept him in a cage for about 8 years and he was only let out to breed. A shelter worker saved him from a dog meat market about a year ago. He seemed to be pretty happy the last several months and liked to go for walks(at a very slow pace). When he was excited, he would slowly move his front feet up and down(looked like an elephant trying to dance). It was sad and cute at the same time. He was one of my favorites and visited my home for a few days last winter.
More good news. Nine of the ten dogs sent to Japan this summer have been adopted. Six or seven more dogs will be sent by the end of the year. Only one of those lives at the shelter; the others are fostered by shelter helpers and friends.
Unfortunately, next year the sponsor in Japan will bring over dogs from another shelter in Asan. The pups at Mango Mom's will have to wait until the following year for their next turn.

Hi Wes, Was Nay-mee-lee adopted? Hope so! He's the nicest little boy and deserves a good home. (If others don't remember, he's the shih-tzu who was brutally kicked and had a broken jaw. By the time he got help and x-rays, the bone had deteriorated to the point it would have been almost impossible to reattach it. So his lower jaw hung down and his little tongue always hung out...but oh so cute.) If I remember, he did go to Japan.
Thanks Wes, for keeping us updated on Mango Mom's. They always need more help, donations and volunteers. You do a great job there.:)
Unfortunately, Ne-mil-ee is the one of ten that has not been adopted. I was told that the sponsor will keep him for herself if no one else wants him.

Well, at least he's safe and being loved and cared for. Good for Na-mil-ee!
