I could use some tips on cat care. I'll be adopting my first cat tomorrow and I know the basics of taking care of a cat. I could use some pointers.

I'm wondering things like: Cat food that isn't expensive, but will be good for the cat.

I don't want the cat to become obese. I watched animal planet where they talked about all the health problems it causes the cat.

How do I get the cat to use the litter box for the first time? Do I just point it out to the cat and it will automatically know?

I read about some enzyme cleaner, does it work well?

How often should I maintenance the cat? (clip nails, give it a bath, etc...)

Also, any other tips you could give me would be great.

Cats pretty much just know how to do it. Just but the cat in the box and he will have the idea. They are not hard to train at all. Because they want to be tidy.

Cut the nails when they get sharp, flip the cat on its back in your lap, and press on its paw to get his nails out, and cut away. Don't cut too much off, but take the sharp end off.

my cat passed away recently from Kidney failure. I learnt a bit more about foods, feed a good quality wet food. The dry foods tend to lead more often to kidney problems which are very common and often fatal.

If your cat pees outside the box it can be a sign of illness so be sure you always are mindful of that. Sometimes its the only sign. I personally think all those special cleaners suck. I use baking soda to remove the odours it works so much better, and to clean I use vinegar or bleach( not together!)

If you are worried about a cubby cat, get him a cat food for maintenance or indoor cats. They have less calories, and crude fat. That should help maintain a healthy weight.

But be careful...Wet food should only be used as a supplement or treat...It causes gingivitis whereas hard food cleans the teeth at the same time...It goes case by case too obviously~

A good quality food should be hard and HELP prevent kidney failure; don't forget that you can do all the best possible and the cat could still get it.
