You may have read the story on the front page of the lonelylifetime website about the shelter in Daejon which is being forced to close at the end of October.

Below are photos of many of the dogs who desperately need either an adopted home or foster home before they are sent to other shelters (which, unlike the Daejon shelter, are unlikey to be "no kill" shelters).

Anyone who is interested in meeting some of these dogs, we are organising weekly trips every Saturday. Details are below, for more information please contact me via e-mail at tim.vasudeva AT gmail.com or my mobile 010 8940 5233. Anyone who can't make it on a Saturday, Annie in Daejon is available to accompany you to the shelter before 1.00pm on weekdays (it is in the countryside and hard to find) her contact details are e-mail ansauvage AT yahoo.ca or mobile 010 4566 2322.

Our normal Saturday arrangement is to take the 9.00am KTX train from Seoul Station to Daejon (meeting at Seoul Station between 8.30 and 8.45am). It takes about an hour. We meet anyone going to Daejon from elsewhere (ie not from Seoul) at the Daejon train station at 10.00am and then we take taxis to the shelter (about 20 mins by car).

As far as adoption, transportation etc is concerned the usual process is:
- anyone considering adoption should definitely come down to the shelter to meet the dogs in person (adopting a dog is such a personal process, you always need to make your own connection with an animal);
- you can spend as much time as you like at the shelter getting to know any of the individual dogs that you wish to - taking them for walks, hanging out with them on the grass etc;
- the adoption fee is 30,000 KRW which goes to Mrs Jung the shelter manager (the lady who runs the place and pretty much pays for everything out of her own pocket);
- we will generally then take any dog in the process of adoption to the vet at the Daejon Emart (he is very kind and does a lot of work with the rescue dogs for very little cost) he will look at each dog to check their general health, give them a blood test to check for heartworm etc, that normally costs about 25,000 KRW;
- if the particular dog is not up to date with its vaccinations (which many are not, as Mrs Jung just does not have the money) then it is probably a good idea to get the immunisations done (which will cost another 25,000 KRW);
- as long as the dog is in a carry cage (you can either bring one with you or the Emart vet sells them) then the dog can come back on the KTX train no problem.

Tim, We have contacted KAPS today and Sunnan will put us in contact with Daejeon members who may be able to help, and possibly bring some dogs to Boeun.

Wibidad! That's awesome, awesome news. I hope the Boeun shelter will be able to accomodate all the big ones! All fingers, toes and paws here are crossed! Thanks so much for going down and talking to KAPS!

I feel truly sorry for those dogs. I am wondering if there are any members visiting there regularly. If there are, do please let me know. I can join him, or her, to visit the shelter to help them and adopt one of those dogs. There are quite few people interested in adapting dogs while they are in Korea so if you give me more details and who I need to contact to, it would be appreciated. By the way, I live in Seoul, ( in Itaewon near Hyatt hotel) so do my friends.

Hi Kharma

I take adopters, fosterers and volunteers down to the shelter from Seoul every Saturday.

We meet at Seoul station at 8.30am and take the 9.00am KTX train to Daejeon, which takes exacty an hour.

I also live neat Itaewon so I could give you a lift to Seoul station if you like. Give me a call on 010 8940 5233 or send me an email at tim.vasudeva@gmail.com.

Kind regards
Tim

Hi Tim
Thanks for the informations. I would be pretty busy next two weeks as there are tones of work to do, also I have a friend who is going to stay in my flat before he return back to his country. I am pretty sure that I can make time on the 16th Feb.

I will give you a call or send you email two weeks time. I will check if there are any friends interested in visiting the shelter.

best regards

Keith

PS. If we visit the shelter as volunteers, do we need to prepare something ?

timvas
02-01-2008, 05:33 PM
Hi Keith

No need to prepare anything beforehand. The dogs really appreciate volunteers coming down to visit them & take them for a walk.

They get very little exercise or one-on-one attention from anyone other than the volunteers, as Mrs Jung is just flat out trying to look after all 130-odd dogs.

Let me know if you would like to come down on a particular Saturday.

Cheers
Tim

Hi there!

2 of us are coming down on Saturday to adopt or at least foster a dog. We are coming from Cheongju, which is close to Daejon. Was wondering if we still meet at the train station, or bus terminal or whatnot. We are planning on taking the bus from CHeongju. SHouldn;t take longer than 30-45 minutes. Just was wondering if someone from there could give us directions once we arrive/what time to meet everyone etc.

Thanks so much. I am really looking forward to it!

Hi,
Wondering if anybody could give me some info on transporting an adopted pet home. I would love to adopt a dog, the smaller the better because I don't have a whole lot of room in my apartment. My concern is getting a dog home since I live in Suwon. Are dogs allowed in cabs? on the subway?

Scarlet13
02-04-2008, 07:29 PM
You can bring dogs on buses and in taxis. If a cab driver doesn't want dogs in his cab he wont stop. And we brought Bibi from Seoul to Changwon on a bus and no one said anything. I don't think you should have a problem.

You can have a dog on the subway without a cage as long as it's a fairly small dog. I've got a cocker spaniel... she's about 8kg so not tiny and I took her from Seoul (near Jamsil) to Oido with no problems. No one said anything. Like others have said, as for taxis, if they don't want the dog in the car, they just won't. I've only ever had one taxi pass me by because of the dog.

Hi all - thanks for your posts!

Firstly - Scarlet13 / rachaelg / Kharma, we would love to have you along on our trip this Saturday. For anyone coming from Seoul, we meet at Seoul train station at 8.30am in order to catch the 9.00am KTX train to Daejeon, which takes almost exactly an hour. Anyone making their own way to Daejeon - we meet at Daejeon train station between 10.00 and 10.15 am

One caveat this week is that, because of lunar new year and the fact that the whole of Korea is travelling, I wil have to check tomorrow morning that we can in fact get tickets on Saturday's KTX (I only thought of this earlier this morning...) Will let everyone know tomorrow if its definitely on. In the meantime if you could confirm for me whether you are coming from Seoul on Saturday (assuming I can get tickets) then I will book them tomorrow just to be sure.

Mandy - you will normally have no problems taking a small dog with you on the train, bus or taxi if you have them in a dog carrier. We have taken 5 dogs back to Seoul at the same time on the KTX (including the Jindo adopted by Luis) all were in carry cages and we had no issues. I can lend you a carrier if you need one, I'll bring a couple with me on Saturday.

Cheers
Tim

Hi all

I booked 10 tickets for the 9.05am KTX from Seoul to Daejeon this Saturday, so we should be all set for this weekend's trip.

If you could confirm for me who is attending (and if you're bringing friends with you) and also whether you intend to meet us at Seoul (at 8.30am) or Daejeon (at 10.00am) stations I would be appreciative.

Cheers
Tim

I am interested in adopting/fostering a dog but I live fairly far from Seoul (Sam Cheok)... 7 hours by train, 5 by bus. Also, i don't have a car. I also need to find out the pet policy in my apartment.... Communicating with my building manager failed because he doesn't speak any English. I don't teach until March, so I have the entire month of February off.. plenty of free time to take care of someone...

subways are fine. No cage needed unless they are crazy (as mentioned above). There are no rules for pets on subways. As for buses and trains, the rule is that they are supposed to be in a crate. As for taxis, the ones that stop while seeing your dog are fine with it. It will be easier to get a taxi with a crated dog though. :)

pukka
02-15-2008, 10:12 AM
Based on my 3years experience in several places:
Train: medium and big dogs has to be in a crate
small dogs you can travel with in a soft carry bag on your lap
which is more comfortable for the dog.
Subway: The same!

Busses: won't let you with any dog that they consider''big''
Besides,if they let you with a caged dog they want you to put
the dog under where the bagage is and it is hot there thus cruel.

Though smaller dogs they accept in busses but then use a soft
bag because when you use a ''hard carrier'' they won't let you to
bring that to your seat.Hard carriers has to go to the bagage
under the bus.

Taxi's: Most taxi's let you in when you have a blanket with you
for a bigger dog and keep small dogs in your lap or in a bag.
When you bring a medium size dog or bigger dog,keep the dog where
your feet is,that way the dog stays quiet during the trip ;)

I never rode the ferry but I have taken my Maltese to the States 3 times as a carry on. I took him to the hajangshil (bathroom) and put down the pottie paper and he peeed. Good dog! Then just throw it in the trash....may be the same on a ferry.

Hi luvadog

We will be taking people to the shelter on Saturday (1st March). If you are in Daejeon we can meet you at the Daejeon train station at 10.00am and you can come out to the shelter with us then - how would that be?

Let me know if that suits you.

Hi Tim
I am awfully sorry for not being able to join the trip to the shelter last saturday. As I mentioned at the Canadian pub last friday, I have been suffering with the back pain since my last trip to Daejeon, can hardly move sometimes and the pain get worse when I lift things. I do still have the pain but hopefully it will get better soon so I can join you guys this weekend.
Do please put me on the list. I am not sure if Brenda can join us this weekend. I will talk to her and will let you know soon.

Best regards

I am coming from Busan to help on April 5th. I would also love to bring a baby home with me to Busan. Are their pet supplies stores around the shelter (or the trainstation) where I can get pee-pee pads, collars, food, crate, leash.... at least for the 2 hour train ride home?

PS I am planning to help out on April 5 at the shelter.

I also need to find out the pet policy in my apartment.... Communicating with my building manager failed because he doesn't speak any English. ..

For those who don't speak Korean and can't call a friend, there's BBB translation, a free service that connects you with a volunteer anytime. The number is 1588-5644 ... I think it's toll free.

Thankfully, there has been more and more time allowed to find homes for dogs at the Daejon shelter. But, I would like to know how many she will be permitted to keep when the extensions end? Is there a legal limit to how many animals someone can keep?

I'd like to know. I may need help if I can't manage her in my officetel. She is following me really well these days and sometimes, you'd never know she's blind, except when she runs and whacks into something. But she usually responds to my "Hey!" and stops because she has connected the command with a whack on her head. Hey, if we can all get along, maybe I could get number 4?? Wes! You're a bad influence!!!
