Hi everyone
I'm moving to Pusan on the 11th of October to go to a university in Korea
around the Namgu area I think
And since I'm not allowed to work I'll have lots of spare time before classes start in March. Instead of bothering my aunt and uncle to take me out I wanted to volunteer my time to help dogs. I don't know of any animal shelters in Korea and the ones I could find online were all in Seoul or Daegu. Can anyone help me find one, please?

Hi Jiyoung

Here's a link to what I think is the Busan chapter of KAPCA: http://www.animallife.or.kr/

If you're a Korean reader maybe you can let us know if that's what the website really is and if they have any info on where to volunteer there (my Korean skills are very poor and basic). I know I've read somewhere at some point of a vet clinic in Busan that held strays for adoption, but I can't find the info anymore. There has got to be something in Busan, since it's such a big city.

Anyway, I'll keep searching and let you know if I find anything more.

Thanks for joining the forum!

Karen

I'm Korean but raised in the US so I can read the stuff on that page but I don't understand a thing...which I REALLY need to work on before I start school. The last time I went to Korea for vacation I saw so many strays...especially near my grandmother's cemetary...it broke my heart so now that I'll be a resident for a while I really want to help. Especially since I have to leave my dog here with my mom and sister I need something to fill that hole with. I will call my uncle who lives in Busan and ask him if he knows anything and if I find something I'll let you know as well. Thanks a bunch!

I'll try and get someone to translate that website =)

Wow that is a lot of time , i am sure you can find something . There are
many vets around the country who are helping stray cats though i heard
from my Korean friend that Pusan is not a very dog friendly city which means that
people are dumping there pet as easy as they bought it .
Pusan has a big stray animal problem .
I will help finding you something too, keep on checking ! Since Pusan doesn't have a
none killing shelter ,i think best is to find a vet who is taking care of stray dogs .

Hi again,

I just found a mega-list of Korean animal helping sites: http://kr.ks.yahoo.com/service/wiki_know/know_view.html?dnum=LAC&tnum=241771

Expectedly, (and unfortunately for us) they're all in Korean!! I recognize a few of the URLs and I don't think they have English on their pages, but I haven't checked the whole list of course. If you find any specifically Busan located ones and they don't have English, yes I'd asking the relatives for help! Do your aunt and uncle have any pets? I hope they're sympathetic to your feelings about animals.

The other choice would be to find the Busan city home page and check what kind of program the city has for animal control. Daejeon's system is pretty dismal, but every city is different. One place near Seoul actually runs a no-kill shelter for cats.

It would be great if you could find a place to volunteer at near where you live that wasn't too depressing, I'm sure there has got to be something in a place the size of Busan... Pukka's right though, you're best bet might be to help a vet who is doing rescue.

By the way, what are you going to be studying? Is your program going to be all in Korean? Daunting! Oh, I understand it will be sad to leave your dog behind, lucky you have family to take care of her while you're gone.

Hi, I just saw that this is a really old thread and that ARK's "resources" section does have a link to a Busan shelter where the main language is English: http://www.animalrescuekorea.org/links/showlink.php?do=showdetails&l=155

I hope this helps.
