From one of Asan shelter volunteers: "Snowman is such a sweety. My friend took him on a long long walk. He's a bit of a dog n00b but Snowman was no trouble for him at all. He walked calmly and was kind to everyone he met - both dogs and people. There are quite a few dogs that look like him at the shelter so I think he doesn't stand out as much as he should. He really is a nice dog. I'm sure he'd make a great pet as he is so gentle and loving. He's very friendly and really enjoys pats but he's not clingy or demanding. He waited patiently tied up under a tree while we took photos of some of the other dogs didn't get restless or impatient when he saw other dogs going off for waks while he watched form his cage in the sun.
If you want an easygoing friend then go and visit Showman! He's waiting for you".

We visited with Snowman this weekend. Poor guy needed a bath! Here are before and after pictures. The poor love got bit though on his way to a walk. :( Shelter life is hard. Please give this precious boy a real life with love. You will be so glad you did! And he will too!

Poor Snowman was not so snowy when we saw him last Sunday! And his ears are in bad shape too - seems to be some sort of infection which was then started bleeding when another dog bit one of them :( Still, he was a happy boy to be out of his cage and to walk down the hill and stretch his legs a little.

This boy needs a nice bath and a warm home. He will be the perfect companion. He is so friendly and loving!

Take him home with you!!

How are Snowman's ears now? Is there anyone who's shown interest in fostering Snowman? If I didn't have a large dog staying with me and my 2 dogs right now, I'd take him in immediately. He seems like he'd be the type to get along well with other dogs.

His ears got treated last Sunday by one of Mr. Park's friends who helps at the shelter. His body and hair looked fine, but the hair on his ears is thinned out. Poor Snowman needs some regular TLC--I think he's been at the shelter since at least as long as I've been there, which is now 13 months.

He was his usual friendly self, and he was happy to just sit in my lap and watch people and other doggies go by. When he got put in the pen with the other dogs to be treated for his ears, after he was there for a while, he leaped over and was just hanging around--didn't run away but was enjoying sniffing things and some freedom from his metal cage. One thing I noticed yesterday is that Snowman seems smart!

As far as I know, no one has expressed interest in fostering Snowman. He could really use a break.

I did ask about a few of the small dogs, including Snowman, before. However not the way things are right now. I'm hoping to get the dog staying with me moved to a new foster home without other dogs to bother (the sooner the better). Is Snowman barky if you leave, and does he get along (not pester) other dogs? Good to hear the ears aren't that bad, but he does seem to have been on the boards here for quite a while. I'd like to get him out of there for the winter if possible.

annemariew's picture

Hi Dorothy, I will pay better attention to that next weekend, but I don't remember him being barky at all. And he definitely gets on well with other dogs. :)

Consider Snowman ~

dorothy and toto's picture

Still there?

clare_bell's picture

Yes apparently Snowman is still waiting at the shelter.

Does anyone know whether Snowman has had his health check and heartworm test?

Sofia's picture

Not yet.
Here he is - out handsome boy!

clare_bell's picture

Snowman was his usual adorable self yesterday. It is so cold at the shelter...I often think that he must be thinking "surely today will be my day?" as he's been there so long and seen so many friends come and go. I wish someone would give him a chance and take him in! I would if I didn't already have 3 fosters!

Quick update: Snowman is out of the shelter and has had a vet check-up. And he is in very good health!
Age is estimated at 3yrs.
Weight is 7kg, heavier than expected weight.
Heartworm negative, X-rays show normal heart size. Has been dosed with topical multi-worm/parasite treatment.
Antibody levels very good for several diseases except for distemper which is on the low side but above the base, meaning he likely was vaccinated before as a puppy but the rounds were not completed so immunity is not at good levels.
All organs are normal in size and there are no abnormalities in those or in the spine/skeleton.
Haemoglobin and white cell counts were all in a very good range, indicating healthy immune system.
Kidney, liver etc. test show that they are all functioning well.
One small spot of fungal attack (ringworm) on one ear, causing scaliness and hair loss, but it's limited to that area and was cleaned and treated by the vet, and should clear with close attention to it.
Ears were cleaned by the vet to remove overgrowth of yeast (malassezia fungus) but nothing that's out of the ordinary. Dogs with ears that flop down are more prone to this and it just requires regular cleaning with ear cleaning solution. Not a health risk.

All in all, a great health report!

Snowman has adjusted rapidly to life outside the shelter and in a home, and is now in the adjustment/observation phase before he heads into the first round of vaccinations next week. It looks to be going very well and should go ahead on schedule. Further updates coming shortly.

Looking good Snowman!! :)

HEALTH UPDATE:
Snowman has recently had his DHPPL vaccination and Corona virus vaccination. Unfortunately he appears to have some kind of skin itch which the vet says could be a food or environmental allergy or a fungal infection (between his toes). The fungal ear infection (on the outer part of his ear) is being treated with daily wiping with chlorhexidine solution. It remains confined to one small spot on one ear only and has not gotten any worse.

In about 2 weeks time, Snowy will be ready to get a rabies vaccination. At that time, he might also get a canine flu vaccine (not certain about this).

MichelleBrook's picture

OMG! So great to hear that he is healthy and getting his much needed vaccinations! Can you post some pictures? I'd love to see his handsome face! I bet he is looking so happy! How is his behavior now that he is in a home? Oh he must be loving it! Thank you so much for the update and for the great work fostering! :)

dorothy and toto's picture

Snowy is doing well. He still has the fungal infection (one spot) on his ear, but it seems to bother him a lot less now (still being cleaned daily with chlorhexidine). I think he has a bit on his toes too. After trimming some hair on his feet I found a small scaly spot similar to on his ear, and Snowy often licks or nibbles at his feet because they seem itchy. I'll try the chlorhexidine on those areas as well.

Snowy really loves being outside and will get very excited at the possibility of going out. I have to keep a close watch on him and a tight hold of the leash as he will try to run off in his excitement. Also, unlike my dog, he has no sense of the dangers of traffic. I think he might miss the shelter a little, because he was outdoors there so much. However, Snowy seems happy enough to be inside and near somebody (seems okay around my dogs but they haven't become friends and he occasionally growls at one of my dogs but nothing serious, just possessive of me I think).

If possible, I would like to find some people who could help me with Snowy's behavior outdoors. When he's inside he only barks or growls a little when he hears noises outside the front door or close by in the building, and otherwise is usually very quiet. But when we are outside and encounter people, he will suddenly start growling or barking at certain people, for no reason that I can discern. It's only some people (including children). And at other times he will either seem to have a friendly interest in passing people (trying to follow, sniffing etc.) .There seems to be no real way to predict who he will bark at. A couple of times Snowy was set off by a child shouting in excitement or making a sudden movement towards him but aside from those times, there has been nothing beforehand to make him start barking.

dorothy and toto's picture

As far as I can tell, Snowy never barks when I leave the house. I always get him to go into the crate before I go out, and he seems to be fine once he's in there (at first he didn't want to go into the crate and I had to kind of shove him in, but since then I've worked on training him to go in there to get food and treats so he's gotten a lot better about this).

dorothy and toto's picture

I just want to work on this one aspect of Snowy's behavior (barking at people for no apparent reason - but this is only sometimes). He's a very sweet and lovely dog, and he had no problem settling into living in a home. He only peed 3 or 4 times indoors (he will try to mark) before I got him to stop doing that and to go outside only, which is really fast considering he'd been living at the shelter for most of his life up until then. Also, he's responding well to tone of voice and certain commands such as "no" (in English and Korean), and "stay" (he still tends to follow me around even if I'm just getting up from a chair to do something, or going to the toilet- this has improved since he first came). He doesn't really chew on anything except toilet roll and tissue if he can get a hold of that.

How is Snowman doing? New pictures please! ^^

dorothy and toto's picture

This is Snowy out on a walk in this recreation area nearby where there's grass and shrubs to sniff and mark. He kept moving so I only got one or two okay photos, the rest were all blurry or out of frame. Snowy looks all white and woolly here.

Beautiful smart boy, and in red tennis shoes!!! Love that.
